Among Us

Innersloth’s social deduction phenomenon. Six years old, still played globally; the gold standard for the genre.

Welcome to the Cosmo strategy hub for Among Us. Innersloth’s social deduction game launched June 2018 to little fanfare; in summer 2020 it exploded into one of the most-played games on Twitch and mobile. The core formula has held: 4-15 players on a spaceship-themed map, most are Crewmates with tasks to complete, but 1-3 are Impostors who sabotage and eliminate Crewmates. The genre-defining innovation was the meeting/voting system; group discussion and accusation drive most of the gameplay. Everything below is vanilla, mechanics-only knowledge: the match loop, Crewmates vs Impostors, tasks, sabotages, meetings and voting, the maps, the role system, Hide and Seek mode, cosmetics, audio and settings, and pro tips.

01 · The Match Loop

Crewmates complete tasks; Impostors kill and sabotage.

  • 4-15 players per match Lobby size from 4 (minimum) to 15 (maximum) players. Roles assigned at match start: most are Crewmates; 1-3 are Impostors depending on host settings.
  • Crewmates win by completing all tasks All Crewmates have a task list. Complete all assigned tasks across the team to win. Tasks include wire repair, sample analysis, fuel transfer, etc.
  • Crewmates win by voting out all Impostors Alternative win condition. During emergency meetings, vote out Impostors. Successfully ejecting all Impostors wins the round.
  • Impostors win by eliminating Crewmates Until Crewmates equal Impostors in number, Impostors keep eliminating. Sabotages distract; murders eliminate.
  • Match length: 5-15 minutes Quick matches by gaming standards. Shorter games (4-5 players) end in 3-5 minutes; full 15-player games last 10-15 minutes. Casual session-friendly.
  • Voice chat optional but transformative Among Us without voice chat is a different game. With voice chat (Discord, in-game proximity), social deduction becomes deeply rewarding.
  • Public matchmaking vs private Public lobbies pair you with strangers; private lobbies for friends only. Both modes have active matchmaking.

02 · Crewmates vs Impostors

Two roles, opposite objectives.

  • Crewmates: task-focused Crewmates can move, complete tasks, report bodies, call emergency meetings (limited per match), and vote. Cannot eliminate other players. Win by tasks or by voting out all Impostors.
  • Crewmate task lists Each Crewmate has 3-8 tasks (settings-dependent). Visual tasks (Wiring, Asteroids, Garbage) prove innocence when others witness them. Common tasks are shared; specific tasks vary per Crewmate.
  • Impostors: deception and elimination Impostors can kill (cooldown-gated), use Vents for fast movement, sabotage (lights, oxygen, doors, reactor), and pretend to do fake tasks. Cannot complete real tasks.
  • Impostor kill cooldown After each kill, the Impostor has a cooldown (15-60 seconds, settings-dependent). Pacing kills carefully prevents detection.
  • Vents (Impostor mobility) Impostors can enter and exit vents for fast cross-map travel. Vent connections are limited per map; learn vent networks to plan kill routes.
  • Impostor sabotage menu Lights (darkens vision), Oxygen depletion, Doors locked, Reactor meltdown. Sabotages either kill the team if untouched or distract Crewmates from tasks.
  • Impostor count (host setting) 1-3 Impostors per game depending on host settings. 1 Impostor in small games; 2-3 in 10+ player lobbies. Balance for game length.

03 · Tasks & Sabotages

Crewmate work and Impostor counter-work.

  • Common tasks (Crewmates share) Some tasks are common across all Crewmates: Swipe Card, Fuel Engines, Empty Garbage. Useful for verifying Crewmate behavior in shared spaces.
  • Visual tasks (witnessable) A small subset of tasks have visual animations: Asteroids, Wiring (in some configs), Empty Garbage. Crewmates seen completing these prove innocence.
  • Long tasks (timed) Some tasks take 5-30 seconds. Impostors can fake them; Crewmates may seem suspicious if their task progress doesn’t advance.
  • Lights sabotage Darkens player vision to a small bubble. Crewmates panic; Impostors get kill opportunities. Must be fixed via Electrical room switches.
  • Oxygen sabotage (The Skeld) Drains oxygen across the ship. Two simultaneous fixes required (Admin and O2 room). Multi-player coordination needed.
  • Doors sabotage (various) Locks specific doors. Impostors trap Crewmates; Crewmates re-route around locked doors. Tactical sabotage for kill setups.
  • Reactor meltdown / Communications Critical-failure sabotages with timers. Reactor melts down if untouched. Multi-player fixes (two players, two pads).

04 · Meetings & Voting

The social-deduction core mechanic.

  • Emergency Meeting button On Cafeteria (or central area) of each map. Any Crewmate can press it to call a meeting (limited per match). Calls everyone together for discussion.
  • Report Body Find a body? Report it to call a meeting. Reporting body reveals the location and the reporter (used for verification).
  • Discussion phase Players discuss freely. Voice chat (proximity or external) transforms this into a real social deduction game; text chat alternative for non-voice players.
  • Voting Each player votes for one player to eject or "Skip Vote." Majority decides; ties result in no eject.
  • Confirm Ejects (host setting) Some hosts enable "Confirm Ejects": the screen reveals whether the ejected player was Impostor or not. Others disable for higher tension.
  • Lying as Impostor Impostors must lie convincingly. Maintain plausible task lists; fake reactions; build alibis. The strategic depth.
  • Truthful Crewmates getting voted out Innocent Crewmates often get voted out unfairly. Defending oneself with rational arguments and witnessable task completions matters.

05 · The Maps

Five base maps with distinct layouts.

The Skeld (classic) The original map; iconic spaceship
  • Symmetric layout
  • Cafeteria, Reactor, Engines, Storage
  • Multiple vent networks
Bring
Knowledge of all room layouts and vent paths.
Take
Most-played map; the foundation of Among Us strategy.

The Skeld is the default map. Most players start here; competitive matches often use The Skeld.

MIRA HQ Aerial complex map; vertical layout
  • Doors as walls (less hiding)
  • Cafeteria, Greenhouse, Office, Storage
  • Different vent network
Bring
Different vent learning; vertical movement understanding.
Take
More-open map; fewer hiding spots; harder for Impostors in some respects.

MIRA HQ rewards Crewmates who maintain proximity to others.

Polus Surface planet map; outdoor terrain
  • Large outdoor areas
  • Multiple labs and outbuildings
  • Cooler combat tempo
Bring
Patience for longer matches; large area exploration.
Take
Larger map with more rooms; some matches play out across the whole map at once.

Polus matches are slower and more strategic. Impostors must commit to longer kill setups.

Airship Multi-deck flying vessel
  • Multi-floor map
  • Ladders connect decks
  • New spawn-anywhere mechanic
Bring
Multi-deck awareness; rapid floor-change understanding.
Take
Unique vertical layout; spawn mechanic adds strategic variance.

Airship was added later and is generally larger than older maps. Match dynamics differ; some servers love it, others avoid it.

The Fungle Newer jungle-themed map
  • Jungle environment
  • Multiple distinct biomes within
  • Unique tasks and sabotages
Bring
Newer-map exploration mindset; willingness to learn new room layouts.
Take
Visual variety; fresh tasks and sabotages keep the game novel.

The Fungle is the newest map. Less competitive meta-development; more casual exploration.

06 · Roles (Crewmate Variants)

Added roles for variety beyond Crewmate.

  • Engineer (vent access) Crewmate-aligned role. Can enter and exit vents like Impostors. Use for fast travel; can verify Impostor vent activity.
  • Scientist Crewmate-aligned role. Access to the vitals panel (which shows player heartbeats) on-demand. Detect kills in real time without traversing to Admin.
  • Sheriff Crewmate-aligned role. Can kill one Impostor per game. If wrong, the Sheriff dies instead. Adds offensive Crewmate option.
  • Guardian Angel (deceased) Ghost role. After being eliminated, can protect one living Crewmate per round. Adds posthumous influence.
  • Tracker Crewmate-aligned role. Choose one player to track per round; see their movement. Hidden role; track suspicious behavior secretly.
  • Noisemaker Crewmate-aligned role. Creates a noise alert when killed. Helps reveal Impostor location for the living team.
  • Shapeshifter (Impostor variant) Impostor-aligned role. Can shapeshift into another player’s appearance temporarily. Use for blame-shifting and false alibis.

07 · Hide and Seek Mode

Asymmetric one-on-many casual mode.

  • One Impostor vs all Crewmates Solo Impostor with high kill cooldown; Crewmates must complete tasks while avoiding direct contact. Different rule set than classic Among Us.
  • No meetings or voting No meetings; no discussion phase. Pure stealth-vs-hunt mechanic. Faster-paced than classic.
  • Faster pacing Hide and Seek matches resolve in 3-5 minutes typically. Less social deduction; more action gameplay.
  • Different role mechanics Some classic roles work differently in Hide and Seek. Engineer vent access still useful; Sheriff role disabled (no voting).
  • Cosmetic exclusive rewards Specific Hide and Seek matches reward unique cosmetics. Limited-time events award Hide and Seek-themed pets and skins.
  • Solo gameplay variant Some players prefer Hide and Seek’s simpler mechanics. Lower social pressure; faster session pace.
  • Coexists with classic mode Hide and Seek is an alternative game type; classic Among Us mode unchanged. Players choose per session.

08 · Cosmetics & Customization

Skins, hats, pets, nameplates.

  • Skins (full character outfits) Color and full-body outfits. Free starter skins; premium skins via cosmetic packs. Cosmetic-only; no gameplay impact.
  • Hats (top-tier customization) Hundreds of hat options. From simple cones to elaborate themed hats (chef, pirate, alien). Some unlock through achievement progress.
  • Pets (mini-companions) Small creatures that follow your character. Cosmetic only. Premium pets are paid; some unlock through achievements.
  • Nameplates and visors Smaller cosmetic categories. Nameplates display under your character name; visors are facial accessories.
  • Color selection Choose your character’s color. Limited color slots per match; can’t duplicate. Strategic color choice (red is suspicious, etc.).
  • Cosmicube system Battle Pass-equivalent system. Progress per match; unlock cosmetics through Cosmicube progression. Periodic Cosmicube updates with new themes.
  • Limited-time event cosmetics Seasonal events (Halloween, Lunar New Year, anniversaries) drop limited-time cosmetics. Catch them during their event window.

09 · Platforms & Cross-Play

Multi-platform with crossplay support.

  • Mobile (iOS and Android) The originating platform. Free-to-play with ad-supported model. Touch controls; full game accessibility.
  • PC (Steam) Purchased version (~$5). No ads; cleaner experience. Mouse + keyboard controls; preferred for serious play.
  • Console (Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch) Console versions launched 2021-2022. Controller controls; cross-play with PC and mobile.
  • Cross-platform play All platforms can play together. Mobile, PC, and console users join the same lobbies. Account-linked progression carries between platforms.
  • Free-to-play vs paid Mobile is free with ads; PC and consoles are paid (~$5). No gameplay differences; the choice is ad tolerance vs upfront cost.
  • Innersloth account Optional Innersloth account links progression. Sign in to keep cosmetics and progress across platforms.
  • Server regions Multiple server regions (North America, Europe, Asia). Matchmaking pairs players in the same region for low latency.

10 · Audio & Settings

Voice routing is the most-important setup.

  • Voice chat routing Among Us in-game voice (proximity) or external Discord. Most-played mode is Discord during matches. Test mics before joining a serious lobby.
  • Master volume around 50–60 percent Among Us peaks loud during sabotages. Lower master volume preserves headroom for voice chat and ambient cues.
  • Push-to-talk vs voice activation PTT is standard for Discord during matches. Voice activation accidentally broadcasts; PTT is the professional setup.
  • Display: 60 FPS Among Us is mechanically light; runs at 60+ FPS on most devices. Mobile may cap at 30; PC and consoles handle 60+ comfortably.
  • Color scheme accessibility Color-blind settings included. Useful for players who struggle to distinguish certain character colors.
  • Hotkey customization Use task buttons and meeting button conveniently. Standard layout is good; experiment if not.
  • Verify after every update Innersloth ships updates every 2-3 months. Five minutes of menu review per update prevents one bad session.

11 · Pro Tips

Compound habits across the long Among Us arc.

  • Voice chat transforms the game Among Us with voice is a different (better) experience. Set up Discord with friends; the social-deduction depth multiplies.
  • Watch visual tasks for verification Visual tasks (Asteroids, Wiring on some configs, Garbage) prove the player completing them is Crewmate. Watch them; remember who completed what.
  • Track Impostor count by Mediabay or Vitals Mediabay (in some maps) shows recent footage; Vitals (Scientist or Polus admin) shows heartbeats. Use information sources beyond visible body location.
  • Question alibis When a player claims an alibi, verify it. "I was in Electrical with Red": was Red actually there? Cross-check accusations.
  • Don’t skip vote when you suspect Skip Vote saves you from voting out an innocent but lets the Impostor go. Vote based on confidence; don’t default-skip in close games.
  • Use sabotages to set kill traps as Impostor Lights sabotage isolates a target. Vent to kill location, sabotage Lights, eliminate, vent away. The classic Impostor combo.
  • Take breaks Among Us is intense; multi-hour Discord sessions burn out. Pace yourself; the community is welcoming to returning players.
