Ark: Survival Ascended

Studio Wildcard’s UE5 remaster of Ark: Survival Evolved. Tame dinos, raise tribes, beat bosses.

Welcome to the Cosmo strategy hub for Ark: Survival Ascended. Studio Wildcard relaunched the dinosaur-survival flagship on Unreal Engine 5 in October 2023, rebuilding visuals and netcode while preserving the deep systems that made Ark: Survival Evolved a cult classic. The canon map progression — The Island, Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, Lost Colony — spans hundreds of hours of taming, breeding, base building, and boss fights. The Lost Colony expansion added a Skill Tree progression layer; the active roadmap continues through 2026 and 2027. Everything below is vanilla, mechanics-only knowledge — the survival loop, maps and biomes, taming, tribes, breeding, building, leveling, bosses, the Skill Tree, audio and settings, and the pro tips that turn beach bobs into Alpha clearers.

01 · The Survival Loop

Gather. Tame. Build. Breed. Conquer.

  • Open-world survival with creature taming Spawn on a beach with nothing; build to taming flying mounts, riding raptors, raiding bases, and clearing world bosses. The progression curve is hundreds of hours deep.
  • Unreal Engine 5 remaster ASA rebuilds Ark Survival Evolved on UE5 with Nanite, Lumen, and improved netcode. Significant visual upgrade; the core systems carry over.
  • Singleplayer, official PvE, official PvP Three primary playstyles. Singleplayer for learning systems; official PvE for safe progression; official PvP for the full Ark experience including base raids.
  • Unofficial servers and clusters Most active players are on unofficial servers with custom rates and rules. Cluster servers link multiple maps; characters and dinos transfer between them.
  • Tribe-based gameplay Most progression happens in tribes (groups of players sharing tames, bases, and resources). Solo play is possible but slower; tribe play is the standard.
  • Boss-fight progression Each map has a boss arena. Defeating bosses unlocks engrams, items, and (on the canon path) the next map’s narrative.
  • Active roadmap through 2027 Wildcard continues to ship content. Lost Colony, Genesis Ascended, and other expansions extend the canon path; ARK 2 (separate game) is in long-term development.

02 · Canon Maps & Biomes

The Island through Lost Colony — a planned progression.

  • The Island The original map. Balanced biomes (Beach, Redwoods, Snow, Volcano, Swamp). The recommended starting map; all bosses lead to the broader canon path.
  • Scorched Earth Desert map. Heat survival, sandstorms, wyverns. Higher difficulty than The Island; the first DLC progression step.
  • Aberration Underground / radiation map. No flying mounts in most zones; radiation hazards; unique creatures (Rock Drake, Reaper). Significantly harder than the previous two maps.
  • Extinction Earth in the future. Open-world Titans (Forest, Desert, Ice) as raid bosses; King Titan as the campaign cap. Different boss structure than the earlier maps.
  • Lost Colony Latest canon map. Added the Skill Tree system, new creatures, expanded narrative. Massive update in October 2025; continues to receive balance patches.
  • Free maps: Valguero, others Wildcard releases free community-style maps. Valguero Ascended launched October 22, 2025. Active maps outside the canon path.
  • Genesis Ascended (upcoming) Part 1 in development for 2026/2027. Continues the canon narrative; introduces new mechanics and biomes.

03 · Taming Methods

Three primary tame styles, plus exotics.

Passive Tames Approach calmly; offer food
  • Parasaur (berries)
  • Moschops (mejoberries, then preferred food)
  • Mesopithecus (kibble)
  • Most herbivores below threat level 3
Bring
Patience and the right food. Some passive tames flee on contact; sneak with stealth gear.
Take
Easy first tames; useful for resource gathering and basic mounts.

Passive tames are the gateway. Most players start with a Parasaur or Moschops within the first hour.

Knockout (KO) Tames Knock unconscious; feed through unconsciousness
  • Raptor (tranq arrows)
  • Argentavis (Argy bolas + tranqs)
  • Pteranodon (bola + tranqs)
  • Ankylosaurus, Doedicurus, Therizinosaurus
Bring
Tranq arrows or tranq darts, bolas to immobilize small creatures, and torpor-raising food (narcoberries, narcotic).
Take
Combat mounts, resource-gathering specialists, and the bulk of the mid-game tame roster.

KO tames require torpor management. Monitor unconsciousness; force-feed narcotics to keep them under during taming.

Bring
Map knowledge, parents-of-target avoidance plan, milk/specific food for the baby. Hours of investment per tame.
Take
The highest-tier mounts and breeding stock. Wyverns and Drakes are end-game flying mounts.

Exotic tames are end-game content. Bring a high-level tribe; do not solo a Wyvern nest until you understand the mechanics.

04 · Tribe Dynamics

Solo is possible. Tribe is the default.

  • Tribe sizes (server-dependent) Most servers cap tribe size (5, 10, 25 players typical). Larger tribes scale gathering and combat; smaller tribes coordinate easier.
  • Tribe roles Tamer, breeder, builder, gatherer, raider. Specialize within the tribe; one player who handles all roles burns out fast.
  • Tribe permissions Rank-based permissions control access to dinos, structures, and tribe-owned resources. Founder rank has full control; newer members get limited access until trusted.
  • Trust is the bottleneck Tribe insiders ("insiders") who join to grief or transfer assets out are the single biggest tribe-disruption cause. Vet new members; restrict permissions until trust is earned.
  • Alliance system (server-dependent) Tribes can ally with other tribes. Allies cannot damage each other on PvP servers; useful for large-scale coordination.
  • Tribe logs Track all tribe events: deaths, structures destroyed, dinos lost. Investigate insider activity by checking logs after suspicious losses.
  • Cross-server transfers On clusters, characters and dinos transfer between maps. Plan tribe operations across the cluster; the canon-path bosses span multiple maps.

05 · Breeding & Mutations

End-game progression lives in the breeding pen.

  • Stat inheritance Babies inherit each stat from one of the two parents (55/45 probability). Breed for the parent with the highest stat per slot; over generations, max-stat lines emerge.
  • Mutations Random stat increases on baby creatures. Each parent can carry up to 20 mutations on each side; managing mutation counters is end-game depth.
  • Color mutations Mutations can also change color regions. Color-only mutations are cosmetic; stat mutations add power.
  • Imprinting Baby creatures require imprinting (feeding, walking, cuddling) during the maturation period. Full imprint grants stat and rider bonuses; partial imprint scales proportionally.
  • Time-gated by maturation Babies take real-world hours to mature (or days on official rates). Server multipliers reduce wait time; this is one of the biggest reasons unofficial servers are popular.
  • Breeding stock vs combat dinos Separate the breeding line from the combat line. Combat-deployed creatures die; breeding stock stays safe in the base.
  • End-game stat caps Through breeding and mutations, dinos can reach far beyond their wild-tame stats. End-game tribes field 350+ melee Rexes; the math is in the breeding pen.

06 · Base Building

A base is a fortress and a logistics hub.

  • Tiered materials Thatch (basic), wood (early), stone (mid), metal (late), tek (end-game). Each tier resists more damage; tek requires advanced engrams from boss fights.
  • Foundations and snapping Structures snap to foundations and ceilings. Plan the footprint; the foundation layer is hardest to change later.
  • Defense layers Outer wall, inner wall, vault room. Plant species X (defensive plants), turrets (ballista, tek), and traps (bear, large) layer the defense.
  • Turret control Auto turrets target specified types (players, tames, mixed). Configure ranges and target priorities; a misconfigured turret wastes ammo on irrelevant targets.
  • Storage organization Vaults, large bins, smithy, chemistry bench, fabricator. Organize by category; large tribes have hundreds of containers and need labels or location codes.
  • Cryopods for dino storage Cryopods store live dinos in compact item form. Major space saver; revolutionized base design when introduced. Use them; do not stable hundreds of dinos.
  • Tek tier endgame Tek structures (force fields, teleporters, generators) are the apex. Unlock via boss fights; tek bases are functionally raid-proof to non-tek raiders.

07 · Leveling & Skill Tree

Stats, engrams, and (post-Lost Colony) the Skill Tree.

  • Player stat allocation Each level allocates one point to a stat (Health, Stamina, Weight, Damage, Speed, Food, Water, etc.). Dump Weight and Stamina first; combat stats can come later.
  • Engram points Each level grants engram points to unlock craftable items. Plan the engram tree; do not unlock everything blindly. Critical engrams first.
  • Early-game engram priority Pickaxe, hatchet, campfire, spear, sleeping bag, smithy, mortar and pestle. These first six engrams cover the first few hours.
  • Mid-game engram priority Saddles for your tames, fabricator, chemistry bench, longneck rifle for taming, tranq darts. The mid-game runs on these.
  • Skill Tree (Lost Colony+) Open inventory, click the Skill Tree tab. Earn Skill Points by completing Milestones (Beachcomber, Woodland Worker, etc.). Active and passive abilities augment core gameplay.
  • Skill Tree branches Beast Mastery (taming/mount bonuses), Wayfarer (survivability/movement), Utility (building/harvesting/crafting). Pick a branch focus; do not spread points evenly.
  • Mindwipe respec Mindwipe Tonic resets stats and Skill Tree, refunding all points. Critical for changing builds; craft early and store for later use.

08 · Boss Progression

Three difficulty tiers per arena. Tribute requirements per tier.

  • Gamma, Beta, Alpha tiers Each boss arena has three difficulty tiers. Gamma is entry; Alpha is the hardest. Clear Gamma first; the engram rewards unlock at each tier.
  • Tribute requirements Each boss requires specific tribute items (artifacts, creature trophies, resources). Gather the tribute list before attempting the boss; missing one item means a wasted run.
  • Boss arena combat Limited time (usually 20-30 minutes), no resupply, no respawn. Bring the right tames, the right gear, and the right strategy. Failed Alphas cost the bring-list.
  • Standard composition Most bosses are cleared with a stack of high-stat Rexes, a Yutyrannus for buffs, and a backup support tame. The Yuty-Rex meta is decade-old and still works.
  • Map-specific bosses The Island bosses (Broodmother, Megapithecus, Dragon, Overseer), Scorched Earth (Manticore), Aberration (Rockwell), Extinction (Forest/Desert/Ice/King Titans), Lost Colony bosses.
  • Saddle quality matters Boss arenas reward high-armor saddles. Blueprints from caves and supply drops; saddle quality often decides the run more than dino stats do.
  • Practice in Gamma first Clear Gamma at every map before attempting Beta. Boss mechanics teach you the arena; do not skip tiers because Alpha rewards are tempting.

09 · Progression Strategy

The canon path is The Island → Scorched Earth → Aberration → Extinction → Lost Colony.

  • The Island first Learn the systems on the most balanced map. Tame your first dinos, build your first base, clear the Island bosses (Gamma at minimum).
  • Cluster transfer to Scorched Earth Move characters and key tames to Scorched. Adapt to heat survival, sandstorms, and Wyvern taming.
  • Aberration is the difficulty wall No flying mounts in most zones; radiation areas; aggressive new creatures. Many players quit at Aberration; the ones who push through unlock the rest of the canon.
  • Extinction adds open-world bosses Titans are different from arena bosses. Cultivated tames; meta strategies; one wrong Titan engagement can wipe a tribe.
  • Lost Colony for the Skill Tree The Skill Tree system added in Lost Colony augments all earlier maps. Many players return to The Island after Lost Colony for a different playstyle.
  • Free maps for variety Valguero Ascended and others provide alternative biomes outside the canon path. Useful for breeding farms and casual play; not required for progression.
  • Genesis Ascended is upcoming Part 1 is in development for 2026/2027. The next major progression step after Lost Colony.

10 · Audio & Settings

ASA on UE5 is demanding; tune accordingly.

  • Headphones for directional audio Dino footsteps, ambient zone audio, and combat sounds all rely on stereo. Critical for PvP, less essential for PvE.
  • Master volume around 60 percent Ark audio peaks during combat and weather events. Master volume preserves headroom for ambient cues.
  • Field of view 90 Standard. Wider feels less immersive in third-person; narrower feels claustrophobic. 90 is the public-server consensus.
  • Tune graphics for FPS ASA can struggle on mid-range hardware. Drop foliage and shadow quality; the visual fidelity is impressive but not at the cost of unplayable framerates.
  • Server multiplier awareness Unofficial servers run with custom rates. Check XP multiplier, taming multiplier, harvest multiplier, breeding multiplier before committing. They dramatically change the time investment.
  • Voice chat for tribes In-game voice is limited; most tribes use Discord. Coordinate tribe operations out-of-game; in-game voice for ad-hoc proximity comms.
  • Verify after every major update Wildcard ships content patches and balance patches regularly. Five minutes of menu review prevents one bad session.

11 · Pro Tips

Compound habits across the long progression.

  • Pick one map; finish it first Do not map-hop until you have cleared Gamma bosses on your starting map. Progression compounds; scattered effort across maps stalls everyone.
  • Join an active tribe Solo Ark is a different game than tribe Ark. Most players who quit solo would have stayed in a good tribe.
  • Breed before raiding A boss-clearing breeding line takes weeks. Start early; do not wait until you "need" stronger dinos to begin.
  • Cryopod everything Cryopods store dinos compactly. Use them for travel, storage, and emergency mobility. The single most quality-of-life-improving item in ASA.
  • Server selection matters Pick servers with active admins, sensible rates, and rules you agree with. A bad server choice ruins the experience regardless of skill.
  • Use map waypoints Custom waypoints survive death. Mark caves, supply drops, water sources, and ally bases. Map knowledge compounds.
  • Take breaks Ark sessions are long; tribe responsibilities multiply that. Set boundaries; the game will be here next week.
