Dune: Awakening

Funcom’s open-world survival MMO on Arrakis. Frank Herbert’s Dune meets persistent multiplayer survival.

Welcome to the Cosmo strategy hub for Dune: Awakening. Funcom launched the Frank Herbert-inspired open-world survival MMO in 2025 after years of development and has shipped over 15 updates since release. The current Update 1.4 + The Water Wars DLC (May 19, 2026) introduces the Wind Pass region (a Harkonnen tech hub now controlled by Water Shippers), the Old Quarry Testing Station, and Dr. Jalanta as a new boss. Recently, Funcom made PvP fully optional, putting players in control of how they experience Arrakis. Inspired by both Herbert’s novels and Denis Villeneuve’s film franchise, the game blends survival mechanics with MMO scale: hundreds of players per server, persistent bases, and the iconic giant sandworms. Everything below is vanilla, mechanics-only knowledge.

01 · The Survival Loop

You are a Sleeper on Arrakis. Water is life.

  • You are a Sleeper The narrative frames each player as a "Sleeper": a survivor awakening on Arrakis. Build a character; survive; expand influence; choose factions.
  • Water management (the central mechanic) Water is the most-valuable resource. Drink from harvested moisture; conserve through stillsuit wear; trade water as the highest-value currency.
  • Spice extraction Spice (melange) generates from spice fields. Harvest with thumpers and crawlers; risk sandworm attacks; the economic engine of Arrakis.
  • Day/night temperature Daytime heat dehydrates; nighttime cold drains stamina. Wear stillsuits; build shelters; manage temperature exposure carefully.
  • Base building (persistent) Construct bases on Arrakis. Wood, stone, and Spice-Forged tier structures. Bases persist between sessions; protect with defensive structures.
  • Class-based combat (archetypes) Choose a class identity: Bene Gesserit (mental abilities), Mentat (analytical), Swordmaster (melee), Trooper (ranged). Each opens unique tactical options.
  • Sandworm threat Sandworms appear when sustained vibration is detected. Walk to avoid them; flee on detection; sandworm encounters one-shot most encounters.

02 · Water & Spice Economy

The two resources that drive everything.

  • Water sources Dew collectors, blood-extraction (combat enemies for water), and water shippers (traders). Caches in ruins; rain (rare).
  • Spice fields Spice generates in specific desert zones. Identify with Spice Spotters; deploy thumpers to draw sandworms; extract during sandworm-distraction windows.
  • Stillsuit (essential gear) Worn body suit that recycles water. Wear constantly outdoors; upgrade tiers reduce water loss. The core survival gear.
  • Water Shippers (Water Wars DLC focus) In-game faction. Control the water trade across Arrakis. The Wind Pass area (formerly Harkonnen tech hub) is now under Water Shipper control.
  • Spice as currency Spice and water are the two primary trade currencies. Higher-tier crafting requires both; the economy is real-resource driven.
  • Spice Forging Higher-tier crafting using Spice as catalyst. Spice-Forged structures and weapons are the endgame gear path.
  • Water-poor characters die quickly Without water management, characters die fast in the deep desert. Plan all expeditions with water budgets.

03 · Classes & Archetypes

Four primary archetypes; multi-class possible.

Mentat Analytical specialist
  • Calculate combat probabilities
  • Tactical pre-fight planning bonuses
  • Investigation and lore discovery
Bring
Strategic mindset and willingness to engage with information-gathering mechanics.
Take
Maximum tactical analysis. Pre-combat planning advantages; lore-deep mission rewards.

Mentats are the analytical specialists of Dune lore. Strong in PvE and exploration; less effective in pure combat.

Bene Gesserit Mental and physical control specialist
  • Voice ability (commanding NPCs)
  • Enhanced reflexes and perception
  • Mental combat advantages
Bring
Patience for ability-driven combat and willingness to play unconventional roles.
Take
Unique abilities not available to other classes. Voice ability controls NPC behavior.

Bene Gesserit is the lore-deep class. Significant narrative integration; specialized for non-combat manipulation.

Swordmaster Melee combat specialist
  • Sword mastery (improved melee)
  • Shield combat (movement-based defense)
  • Hand-to-hand techniques
Bring
Aggressive playstyle and willingness to engage in close combat.
Take
Maximum melee damage and survivability. Strong in close-quarters combat.

Swordmasters reference the Ginaz school. Combat-focused class for direct engagement.

Trooper Ranged combat specialist
  • Lasgun mastery
  • Projectile weapons
  • Tactical positioning
Bring
Patience for positioning and willingness to engage at range.
Take
Long-range damage in open Arrakis terrain. Strong in vehicle engagements.

Troopers handle ranged combat. Common entry-class for FPS-trained players.

04 · Factions

The major political powers of Arrakis.

  • House Atreides The "good" major house. Honorable code; defenders of common Sleepers. Faction missions reward tactical and political progress.
  • House Harkonnen The brutal major house. Aggressive doctrine; opposes Atreides; specialty technology including the now-lost Wind Pass tech hub.
  • Fremen The native desert dwellers. Specialty stillsuits, sandworm knowledge, and desert survival. Difficult to join (reputation-gated).
  • Water Shippers (Wind Pass holders) Faction that controls Arrakis’ water trade. Recently took control of the Wind Pass area; central to Update 1.4 and Water Wars DLC.
  • Tleilaxu (specialists) Biological engineering faction. Cloning and genetic specialty; reputation-gated; advanced bio-tech recipes.
  • Bene Gesserit Sisterhood Faction tied to the Bene Gesserit class. Mental discipline; manipulation mechanics; long-term strategic alliances.
  • Faction reputation Each faction has a reputation tier. Choices in missions raise/lower reputation; higher reputation unlocks vendor stock and special equipment.

05 · Vehicles & Ornithopters

Ground and air transport across Arrakis.

  • Sandcrawler (Spice extractor) Massive vehicle for Spice extraction. Slow movement; targets sandworm attacks; required for deep-field Spice harvesting.
  • Ornithopter (flying) Iconic Dune flying vehicle. Wings flap like birds. Fast traversal across Arrakis; vulnerable to ground fire but excellent for exploration.
  • Ground transport (rovers) Standard ground vehicles. Faster than walking; risk attracting sandworm attention if engines aren’t silenced.
  • Carryalls Air-lift transports. Pickup and deploy Sandcrawlers during spice extraction emergencies. The relief vehicle for Spice missions.
  • Vehicle crafting tiers Vehicles range from low-tier scavenged to high-tier Spice-Forged. Each tier costs more resources but provides better performance.
  • Combat vehicles (Water Wars DLC) Armed ornithopters and military variants. Used in larger PvP engagements and faction missions.
  • Vehicle audio attracts sandworms Engine noise creates sandworm rhythm. Manage vehicle use carefully in deep desert; the sandworm threat is constant.

06 · Sandworm Encounters

The iconic threat of Arrakis.

  • Vibration triggers Sandworms respond to vibrations. Walking with deliberate footfalls (no rhythm) avoids detection; running creates rhythmic vibrations that summon them.
  • Sandworm species Multiple sizes of sandworms exist. Smaller worms are encounter-tier; larger Shai-Hulud-class worms are one-shot kill threats.
  • Spice extraction draws sandworms Thumpers (Spice tools) intentionally summon sandworms. Use them as bait while extracting Spice; flee before the worm arrives.
  • Sandworm riding (Fremen path) Advanced Fremen technique. Maker hooks attach to sandworm segments; ride the worm as transport. Difficult; high-reward.
  • Survival when caught If a sandworm engages you directly, immediate evasion is the only option. Sandworm strikes have small windows; outrun their attack rotation.
  • Sandworm rewards Defeated (extremely rare) sandworms drop Worm Teeth and unique materials. Endgame achievement reward for organized squads.
  • Spice worms vs giant worms Spice worms are smaller encounter threats; the giant Shai-Hulud-class worms are one-shot threats. Visual size differences signal threat level.

07 · Base Building

Persistent bases across Arrakis.

  • Tier progression Sand/Stone (basic) → Reinforced (intermediate) → Spice-Forged (endgame). Each tier raises base damage resistance.
  • Water management infrastructure Dew collectors, condensers, water storage. Critical infrastructure for surviving in the deep desert.
  • Spice processing facilities Workshops for processing raw Spice into usable forms. Required for crafting tiers above basic.
  • Defensive structures Walls, gates, traps. PvP-relevant; protect bases from raids. Less important in PvE-only mode.
  • Self-hosted servers (April 2026) Funcom launched self-hosted server support in April 2026. Run your own private community servers; full configuration control.
  • PvP fully optional Recent update made PvP fully optional. Players choose PvE-only (no hostile players) or PvP-enabled servers based on preference.
  • Base abandonment Inactive bases decay over time. Schedule maintenance visits; renew base claim with periodic activity.

08 · Update 1.4 + Water Wars DLC

May 19, 2026 content drop.

  • Wind Pass (new region) Formerly a Harkonnen tech hub, now controlled by Water Shippers. Central to Arrakis’ water trade. New PvE missions and exploration content.
  • Old Quarry Testing Station Scalable new Testing Station with unique mechanics. Players confront Dr. Jalanta (new boss) in her hidden laboratory.
  • Dr. Jalanta (new boss) Unique mechanics specific to her encounter. Multi-stage boss fight; requires team coordination; rewards include unique Spice-Forged items.
  • Water Wars DLC Premium DLC adding new equipment, missions, and faction content. Optional purchase; expands beyond Update 1.4 free content.
  • Secrets of the Water Shippers (Community Challenge) Limited-time community challenge tied to Update 1.4. Tracks Sleepers running through The Old Quarry; rewards community-wide achievement.
  • Free vs paid split Update 1.4 brings core content for free (Wind Pass, Old Quarry, Dr. Jalanta). Water Wars DLC adds premium content for purchasers.
  • 15+ updates since launch Dune: Awakening has shipped over 15 updates since its release. Active live-service maintenance with consistent content drops.

09 · PvP & PvE Modes

PvP fully optional.

  • PvE-only servers No hostile players. Cooperative play; shared exploration; safe base building. Standard mode for most players.
  • PvP-enabled servers Open PvP zones. Players engage each other; bases vulnerable to raid. Higher-stakes mode for competitive players.
  • Hybrid PvP zones Some regions are designated PvP zones even on PvE servers. Risk-reward; enter for unique loot; respect PvP rules within these zones.
  • Self-hosted private servers Run your own server with custom rules. Full control over PvP, PvE, and progression rates.
  • Faction-based PvP Faction wars between Atreides, Harkonnen, and Fremen. Coordinated faction battles for territory and reputation.
  • Spice field competition Spice fields are limited-supply contested resources. Multiple groups can compete for the same field; conflict over Spice harvesting is common.
  • Cross-platform play Steam, console editions of Dune: Awakening share servers and progression. Crossplay supported.

10 · Audio & Settings

Tune for desert atmosphere and combat clarity.

  • Headphones for sandworm detection Sandworm rumbles are audio cues. Distant rumbles warn of incoming worms; quality headphones provide direction.
  • Master volume around 50–60 percent Dune’s ambient audio is consistent; sandworm encounters peak loud. Balance preserves headroom for sudden audio events.
  • Field of view 90–100 Wider FOV reveals more of the open desert. 90 standard; 100 helps in vehicle combat.
  • Performance tuning Dune: Awakening is GPU-demanding. Reduce shadows and view distance for higher framerate in dense base areas.
  • Mouse sensitivity tuning Mid-range for hybrid melee/ranged combat. Lower than pure FPS; higher than turn-based.
  • Disable motion blur Off in the video menu. Saves clarity during vehicle and sandworm encounters.
  • Verify after every update Funcom ships major updates monthly. Five minutes of menu review per update prevents one bad session.

11 · Pro Tips

Compound habits across the long Dune arc.

  • Water management is everything Plan all expeditions with water budgets. Dehydration kills more Sleepers than direct combat.
  • Stillsuits are non-negotiable Wear a stillsuit constantly outdoors. Upgrade tiers reduce water consumption. Survival without stillsuits is unsustainable.
  • Avoid rhythmic footsteps Walk deliberately; sandworms detect rhythmic vibrations. Stop, change pace, change direction. Sandworms hunt rhythm.
  • Join a faction early Faction reputation unlocks vendor stock and missions. Pick one within your first 5 hours; commit to its missions.
  • Use vehicles strategically Vehicle engines attract sandworms. Use them for distance; dismount and walk in worm-territory.
  • Coordinate Spice extractions Spice extraction is high-risk high-reward. Bring multiple players; one tracks sandworms while others harvest.
  • Embrace the PvE-optional shift PvP is now fully optional. New players should start PvE-only to learn mechanics; transition to PvP-enabled servers after mastering basics.
