01 · The Combat Loop
Open world action; party of four; elemental reactions.
- Party of four characters Build teams of four from a roster of 100+ playable characters. Players switch between party members in real time; combat happens with only one active character at a time.
- Real-time action combat Normal Attack chains, Elemental Skills (cooldown-based), Elemental Bursts (energy-based ultimates), Dodge/Sprint. The mechanical depth comes from team rotation rather than per-character complexity.
- Elemental application is the core Each character has an Element. Skills and Bursts apply that Element to enemies and surfaces; reactions between two Elements produce damage multipliers and crowd-control effects.
- Switching elements triggers reactions Apply Hydro, switch to Pyro, and trigger Vaporize for amplified damage. Most viable Genshin team comps revolve around chains of reactions.
- Open-world exploration The world map is the largest in any gacha game. Most progression rewards come from exploration: chests, oculi, world quests, hidden achievements. Plan exploration routes per region.
- Adventure Rank gates progression AR determines World Level (enemy difficulty + drop quality). World Level scales from 0 (AR 0-19) to 9 (AR 60+). Daily commissions are the main AR progression after story.
- Story is the central content Each new region’s Archon Quest is a 8-15 hour cinematic experience. HoYoverse invests heavily in narrative; the story is the reason most players stay.
02 · The Seven Elements
Each character is locked to one Element.
| Element | Visual | Combat Identity |
|---|---|---|
| Anemo (Wind) | Green | Crowd control, elemental absorption (Swirl), enemy grouping. Anemo characters carry teams by setting up reactions for others. |
| Geo (Earth) | Yellow | Construct/shield-based; Crystallize creates shields. Geo characters scale with DEF or off-field damage; situational meta picks. |
| Electro (Lightning) | Purple | High aggregate damage through reactions (Overload, Electro-Charged, Hyperbloom, Aggravate). One of the most-played elements. |
| Dendro (Plant) | Green-yellow | Released in Sumeru (3.0). Pairs with Hydro (Bloom), Electro (Hyperbloom/Quicken), Pyro (Burning). The most reaction-rich Element. |
| Hydro (Water) | Blue | Vaporize partner (with Pyro), Bloom partner (with Dendro). Critical for amplified damage compositions. |
| Pyro (Fire) | Red | Vaporize, Melt, Overload, Burning. The flagship damage-amplifier element; strongest single-target burst options. |
| Cryo (Ice) | Light blue | Freeze partner (with Hydro), Melt partner (with Pyro), Superconduct partner (with Electro). Strong crowd control + reactions. |
03 · Elemental Reactions
The combinations that decide team-comp viability.
- Vaporize (Hydro + Pyro) Damage amplified by 1.5x or 2x depending on which element triggers. The strongest amplifying reaction; backbone of many top compositions.
- Melt (Cryo + Pyro) Damage amplified by 1.5x or 2x. Less common than Vaporize but devastating with Pyro triggering on Cryo-frozen enemies.
- Overloaded (Pyro + Electro) AoE explosion damage. Useful for clearing groups; can knock enemies away (disrupting some team plans).
- Electro-Charged (Hydro + Electro) Periodic damage between Hydro and Electro affected enemies. Strong AoE pressure.
- Frozen (Hydro + Cryo) Freezes enemies in place. Crowd control + reaction setup for Shatter or Melt.
- Bloom and Hyperbloom (Hydro + Dendro) Bloom creates Dendro Cores; Electro detonates them for Hyperbloom; Pyro detonates them for Burgeon. Reaction-of-reactions meta added in Sumeru.
- Quicken / Aggravate / Spread (Dendro + Electro / Dendro + Hydro) Catalyzed reactions that amplify subsequent Electro or Dendro damage. Foundational to Sumeru-era team comps.

06 · Weapons & Artifacts
Two equipment systems; both deep and resource-intensive.
- Five weapon types Sword, Claymore, Polearm, Bow, Catalyst. Each character is locked to one weapon type. Switching weapons (within the same type) is the easiest team-power upgrade.
- 4-star and 5-star weapons 5-star weapons (Signature) have the strongest passives and stats. 4-star alternatives perform within 80-90 percent of 5-star signatures for most characters; F2P-friendly.
- Refinement (1-5) Stack duplicate weapons to Refine up to R5. 4-star weapons reach R5 via Battle Pass and Starglitter shop; 5-star weapons rarely R5 for F2P players.
- Artifact: 5-piece sets Each character equips 5 Artifact pieces (Flower, Plume, Sands, Goblet, Circlet). Wearing 2 or 4 pieces of the same set unlocks set bonuses.
- Stats: Main + 4 substats Each piece rolls a Main Stat (slot-locked options) and 4 random Substats. Substats can roll on enhancement (every 4 levels). Substat optimization is the deep grind.
- Domain farming Artifacts come from Domains (each Domain drops 2 specific sets). Choose the Domain that matches your team’s build needs.
- Strongbox crafting Convert unwanted Artifacts at the Strongbox for a chance to craft a piece from your chosen set. Useful for resin-efficient farming.
07 · Endgame Content
Spiral Abyss has been the flagship since 1.0; Imaginarium Theater added in 5.0.
- Spiral Abyss The classic endgame. 12 floors, each with 3 chambers, each cleared with two teams. Resets every 2 weeks; clear floor 12 for 600 Primogems per cycle.
- Imaginarium Theater (5.0+) Newer endgame mode. Use 18-character roster (or rented characters) across multiple stages; reduced restriction on Element diversity. Easier than Abyss for diverse rosters.
- World bosses Each region has multiple Weekly Bosses and Field Bosses. Weekly bosses drop ascension materials; Field bosses drop talent materials.
- Trounce Domains Weekly boss fights for talent-leveling materials. 3 free clears per week; respect the week cycle.
- Geo Theater Mechanicus (limited events) Tower Defense and other event modes appear in limited windows. Rewards Primogems and event-exclusive items.
- Genius Invokation TCG In-game collectible card game (added 3.3). Separate progression with its own characters and decks. Substantial side content.
- Hangout events (story content) Side stories for specific characters. Earn Primogems and deepen character lore. Permanent content; no time pressure.
08 · Wishes & Pity System
Soft pity at 75; hard pity at 90; 50/50 system.
- Pity counter per banner type Character Event Wish pity (90 hard) is separate from Weapon Event Wish (80 hard) and Standard Wish (90 hard). Don’t mix counts between banners.
- Soft pity at ~75 5-star rate ramps from ~0.6 percent to ~32 percent between pulls 75 and 90. Most 5-stars drop in this window.
- 50/50 system on Character Banner First 5-star you pull on a character banner is 50/50: limited featured character or standard pool. Lose the 50/50? Next 5-star is guaranteed featured.
- Guarantee carries between banners Lose 50/50 on this banner? Next banner’s first 5-star is guaranteed limited. Pity also carries over.
- Weapon Banner: 75/25 Weapon Banner has Epitomized Path. Pick a target weapon; lose first 75/25 once; second pull guaranteed. Different from character banner mechanics.
- Standard Wish (Wanderlust) Permanent banner with fixed 5-star pool. F2P players get a free 5-star Selector from Wanderlust at each anniversary; choose carefully.
- Acquaint vs Intertwined Fates Acquaint Fates: Standard Wish only. Intertwined Fates: Character + Weapon banners. Don’t spend Intertwined Fates on Standard Wish; they’re more valuable.
09 · Resin & Daily Routine
Resin is the resource gate; 200 max regenerates 1 per 8 minutes.
- Original Resin: 200 max Genshin’s stamina system. Regenerates 1 per 8 minutes (180/day natural). Spend on Domains, World Bosses, Ley Lines.
- Fragile Resin Stored Resin items that grant 60 Resin instantly. Earned from quests, achievements, exploration. Save for double-drop event weekends.
- Daily Commissions: 4 per day 4 quests around your current region. Completing all 4 gives 60 Primogems + bonus materials. The 10-minute daily routine.
- Mondstadt mailbox Check mail for event banner gifts, login bonuses, and HoYoLAB rewards. Most rewards expire in 30 days; check at least weekly.
- Realm Bounty Serenitea Pot (housing) earns Realm Currency passively. Trade for furnishings, gems, or characters. Set up once; collect weekly.

10 · Free-to-Play Strategy
Genshin is grind-heavy but generous over time.
- Save for must-have units F2P players accumulate roughly 90-120 wishes per 6-week patch. Identify must-have characters (Bennett, Xiangling, Furina, Kazuha) and prioritize them.
- 4-star characters are not weak Bennett, Xiangling, Sucrose, Fischl, Beidou, Xingqiu, Yaoyao, Faruzan, and many others are top-tier in optimal teams. Constellation duplicates make them stronger.
- Welkin Moon: $5/month The highest-value purchase for any player. 90 Primogems daily for 30 days = 2700 Primogems = ~17 wishes per cycle.
- Spiral Abyss 36-star reset Full clear (36 stars) = 600 Primogems per cycle. F2P clears require team optimization but are reachable with 4-star teams.
- Don’t pull on weapon banners early Weapon banner is the lowest-value pull for F2P. Save for character banners; let 4-star weapons and Battle Pass weapons fill the gear gap.
- Exploration nets massive Primogems Each region’s full exploration = 800-1200 Primogems. Don’t skip exploration; it’s the biggest free Primogem reservoir in the game.
- Hangout Events for character XP Hangout events for specific characters give Primogems on completion. Bonus rewards for relationship choices; useful for lore.
11 · Pro Tips
Compound habits across the long arc of the game.
- One team deep, then expand New players should build one team to Level 80 with full Talents before splitting resources. Spread thin equals weak everywhere.
- Bennett is universal Bennett’s Burst is the strongest support buff in the game. Build him to Constellation 6 if you pull him; he carries every Pyro team.
- Watch theorycrafters KQM (Keqing Mains) Theorycrafting Library, Zy0x, Mtashed, Tenha. Two hours per week of meta content saves dozens of hours of misallocation.
- Map exploration is worth time Each oculus statue, chest, world quest, and shrine gives Primogems. The exploration grind is the F2P player’s biggest reservoir.
- Save for guaranteed pulls When you have 90 wishes saved, you’re guaranteed a 5-star. Don’t pull below 80 pity on a banner you’re committed to; the math favors patience.
- Use the inventory wisely Crystalline materials, mora, and ascension items pile up. Audit inventory monthly; convert unwanted Artifacts at the Strongbox.
- Take breaks Genshin is a marathon. The story takes years to unfold; pace yourself. Returning players are welcomed back with login bonuses every patch.
