Gray Zone Warfare

MADFINGER Games’ milsim-leaning extraction shooter. Lamang Island; three factions; deep persistent progression.

Welcome to the Cosmo strategy hub for Gray Zone Warfare. MADFINGER Games’ tactical extraction shooter launched into Early Access in 2024 with a deep simulation-leaning approach: hyper-realistic ballistics, no UI markers, persistent damage effects, and a continuous open world (Lamang Island, Southeast-Asian-inspired). Currently Update 0.4 "Spearhead" (March 31, 2026) with 100+ new tasks, 25+ new locations, seven redesigned AI factions, and a Combat Outpost system. Three PMC factions; two game modes (Warfare PvPvE, Joint Operations PvE-only); shared progression between modes. Everything below is vanilla, mechanics-only knowledge.

01 · The Extraction Loop

Deploy, complete missions, extract via helicopter.

  • Deploy onto Lamang Island Spawn into your faction’s home base. Lamang Island is the fictional setting; Southeast-Asian-inspired tropical environment with multiple settlements and points of interest.
  • Missions from vendors Each vendor (Handshake, Gunny, Lab Rat, Banshee, Artisan, Turncoat, etc.) offers tasks. Complete tasks for cash, items, and vendor reputation. Higher reputation unlocks better stock.
  • Helicopter extraction (the central mechanic) Call a transport helicopter to extract. Within 100m of LZ, pilot lands; further requires player movement to LZ. Press L to expedite hot LZ takeoffs.
  • Persistent stash Your character’s stash holds gear between sessions. Lose your equipped kit on death; stash protects your saved loot.
  • PvP optional via mode choice Choose Warfare (PvPvE, rival factions engage) or Joint Operations (PvE-only, no hostile players). Progression shared between modes; learn in PvE, monetize in PvP.
  • Realism-leaning combat Realistic ballistics, no minimap dots, persistent damage effects. Slower-paced than typical extraction shooters; tactical thinking rewarded.
  • Persistent progression Character experience, vendor reputation, weapon unlocks all persist. Progression takes hours; rewards multi-session investment.

02 · The Three PMC Factions

Crimson Shield, Mithras, Lamang Recovery.

Crimson Shield International (CSI) Faction headquartered in Kiu Vongsa
  • Starting town Kiu Vongsa
  • Aggressive PMC aesthetic
  • Faction-specific vendors and missions
Bring
Combat readiness for the most aggressive faction starting zone.
Take
Front-line combat experience and the aggressive PMC narrative.

CSI is positioned as the "elite" faction. Choose if you prefer aggressive combat scenarios.

Mithras Security Systems (MSS) Faction headquartered in Nam Thaven
  • Starting town Nam Thaven
  • More-corporate PMC aesthetic
  • Balanced playstyle approach
Bring
Patience for slower progression and balanced strategies.
Take
Mid-range tactical experience; strong support for various roles.

MSS is the balanced choice. Most-popular faction for new players seeking a moderated start.

Lamang Recovery Initiative (LRI) Faction headquartered in Pha Lang
  • Starting town Pha Lang
  • Humanitarian / recovery PMC theme
  • Defensive-leaning playstyle
Bring
Defensive mindset and willingness to engage in narrative-driven plays.
Take
Recovery and humanitarian missions; less aggressive starting position.

LRI is the underdog faction. Smaller player population; strong community for players who prefer it.

03 · Modes: Warfare vs Joint Operations

PvPvE or PvE-only; shared progression.

  • Warfare (PvPvE) Full multiplayer with rival faction players hostile. Real PvP encounters; high stakes; full economic / loot consequences. The intended Gray Zone Warfare experience.
  • Joint Operations (PvE only) No hostile player encounters. Faction-mates only; cooperative play; AI threats only. Recommended starting mode for new players.
  • Shared progression Character XP, vendor reputation, weapon unlocks, mission completion all persist between Warfare and Joint Ops. Learn in PvE, take gear into PvP.
  • Shared stash and inventory Your stash is shared. Pull gear from Joint Ops sessions into Warfare; vice versa. No need to maintain separate kits.
  • Modes complement each other Joint Ops for learning maps, completing risky missions, and stockpiling. Warfare for the full extraction shooter intensity with PvP stakes.
  • Possible mode separation (planned) MADFINGER announced potential future separation of PvP and PvE progression. Community debate ongoing; details TBD.
  • Wipe cycles Servers occasionally wipe (reset all character progress). Major wipes accompany content updates. Plan progression around expected wipe timelines.

04 · The Lamang Island Map

Tropical Southeast-Asian-inspired open world.

  • Lamang Island setting Fictional tropical island. Multiple settlements, villages, military installations, beaches, jungles, mountains. Inspired by Roadside Picnic and STALKER-style tone.
  • Faction home towns Kiu Vongsa (CSI), Nam Thaven (MSS), Pha Lang (LRI). Each safe zone has its faction’s vendors and infrastructure.
  • 25+ Points of Interest (POIs) Villas, military bases, marinas, oil rigs, abandoned settlements. Each has unique loot tables, AI defenders, and quest hooks.
  • Tiger Bay Mall (urban combat) Large urban POI with multi-floor combat. High-tier loot; intense AI presence; major destination for advanced players.
  • Midnight Sapphire High-tier loot zone with rotating keypad mechanics. Deep loot loops; valuable safes and rare items.
  • Coastal areas and beaches Multiple coastal sections. Strategic value: helicopter LZ access; supply drops; smuggling routes.
  • Combat Outposts (Spearhead, 0.4) New capturable strategic locations. Multi-stage capture process: clear AI defenders, then secure via terminal. Provides faction-wide strategic advantages.

05 · Vendors & Tasks

250+ tasks across multiple vendors.

  • Handshake (primary mission vendor) Major task-giver. Recovery missions, intel gathering, asset retrieval. Reputation with Handshake unlocks vendor stock.
  • Gunny (weapons specialist) Weapon-focused tasks. Find rare weapons, complete combat objectives. Reputation unlocks weapon attachments and rare firearms.
  • Lab Rat (technical specialist) Tech and intel tasks. Find documents, retrieve samples, infiltrate systems. Mission complexity is varied.
  • Banshee (intel/PvP) Tactical missions with PvP elements. Risk/reward focused; rewards higher for completion under hostile fire.
  • Artisan (cosmetics and customization) Cosmetic tasks. Less-impactful tasks; complete for aesthetic rewards.
  • Reputation tiers Each vendor has reputation levels. Higher reputation unlocks better stock: weapons, attachments, ammo, armor. Plan task completion for vendor needs.
  • Task stacking Complete multiple tasks in the same area for efficient runs. Vendor task synergy is a key efficiency mechanic.

06 · Helicopter Extraction

The defining mechanic.

  • Call helicopter to LZ Open map, select a Landing Zone, request transport. Pilot flies in; helicopter lands or hovers based on distance.
  • Within 100m of LZ for landing Be near the LZ for landing extraction. Further than 100m: pilot waits but extraction is risky.
  • Helicopter routes adjusted (2026) Streamlined helicopter approach paths in 2026. Helicopters now enter from various map directions; less wait time than launch.
  • Press L to expedite hot LZ takeoffs Hot LZ taking fire? Press L while onboard to expedite the takeoff. Saves your team and the helicopter.
  • Press O to silence headset Helicopter engine noise is intentionally loud. Press O onboard to silence your headset; tactical communication continues.
  • 5-second invulnerability after disembark Disembarking grants 5 seconds of invulnerability. Prevents LZ camping; gives the squad time to spread out.
  • Engine and fuel mechanics Helicopters can run out of fuel or be damaged. Plan transport sparingly; some missions reward foot-based travel.

07 · Weapons & Ballistics

Realistic ballistics; no minimap markers.

Weapon ClassExamplesEffective Range
Assault RiflesM4A1, AK74, HK 416, FALMid-range workhorse. Versatile across CQC and 100-300m engagements.
DMRs (Designated Marksman)MK17, SR-25, SVDLong-range engagement (200-600m). Slower fire rate; higher damage per shot.
Sniper RiflesAWP, M40A6, M82A1Very long-range (400-1000m). One-shot kills with proper rounds and shot placement.
ShotgunsM870, KSG, Saiga-12Close-range one-shot weapons. Most lethal indoor.
SMGsMP5, P90, MP7Close-range automatic. High fire rate; lower damage per shot than rifles.
PistolsGlock, M9, Desert EagleSidearms for emergencies and backup. Some pistols (Desert Eagle) pack rifle-equivalent stopping power.
Ammunition (caliber-specific)5.56 NATO, 7.62x39, 7.62 NATO, .308, 9mmDifferent rounds penetrate different armor levels. Plan ammo for engagement type.
Armor (plate-based)3A (anti-pistol), 3 (anti-rifle), 3+ (heavy plate), 4 (top-tier)Armor classes match real-world plate ratings. Match ammo to expected armor; do not waste high-armor rounds on light targets.

08 · Combat Outposts

Spearhead 0.4 added capturable strategic locations.

  • Capturable strategic locations Combat Outposts (COPs) are capturable locations across Lamang Island. Capture process: clear AI defenders, then interact with central terminal.
  • Faction-wide benefits Captured COPs grant strategic advantages to your faction. Faction-wide visibility; defensive cover; secure operating bases beyond home zones.
  • Extended operations COPs enable hours-long operations without traditional extraction. Set up forward bases; maintain area control.
  • Tug-of-war territory Rival factions challenge captured COPs. Persistent territorial contest; communicate via VoIP or faction-wide messaging to defend.
  • Strategic value COPs near high-value POIs are most contested. Capture COPs near Tiger Bay Mall, Midnight Sapphire for sustained access.
  • Defensive setups After capture, defend with squad coordination. Plant fighter Thralls equivalent; cover overlapping fire lines.
  • Combat Outposts in Joint Operations PvE servers also feature COPs but without enemy faction contests. Capture for narrative/economic benefits in PvE.

09 · Roadmap Through 1.0

Spearhead 0.4 → Battle Forge 0.5 → Shadow Strike 0.6 → Rising Tensions 0.7 → Ground Zero 1.0.

  • 0.4 Spearhead (March 31, 2026) Current update. 25+ new locations, seven redesigned AI factions, 100+ new tasks, weapon/ballistics rework, COPs, new onboarding, in-game Field Manual.
  • 0.5 Battle Forge (planned 2026) Introduces crafting as a core system. Gather resources; forge essential tools and weapon modifications. Less vendor-dependency.
  • 0.6 Shadow Strike (planned 2026/2027) Stealth mechanics. Missions requiring undetected approaches; stealth skill tree; muffled movement and camouflage effectiveness.
  • 0.7 Rising Tensions (planned) Territory control system. Factions compete for influence over specific sectors; balance shifts based on player actions; exclusive vendors for dominant factions.
  • 1.0 Ground Zero (planned final) Located at the center of the map. Restricted area shrouded in mystery; the climax of the player’s journey. Tests every skill earned over years of deployment.
  • Engine upgrade to UE5.5 Already completed in 0.35. Foundation for future content; addresses performance and audio positioning.
  • No firm 1.0 date MADFINGER has avoided firm dates. Quality-over-deadline approach; 1.0 release expected 2027 or later.

10 · Audio & Settings

Realistic audio is the game.

  • Headphones critical GZW audio cues (footsteps, gunshots, vehicle sounds) carry across the map. Quality stereo headphones reveal threat direction.
  • Master volume around 50–60 percent GZW peaks loud during combat. Lower master volume preserves headroom for distant audio.
  • Field of view 90 Standard for tactical shooters. Wider FOV feels arcade-like; narrower restricts peripheral vision.
  • Mouse sensitivity low Realistic tactical shooter rewards deliberate aim. 800 DPI and moderate in-game sensitivity is the public-server standard.
  • Performance tuning GZW is GPU-demanding in dense areas (Tiger Bay). Reduce shadows and foliage for higher framerate; DLSS / FSR recommended.
  • Push-to-talk for proximity PTT for proximity voice. Avoids open-mic leaks; respects squad communication discipline.
  • Verify after every patch MADFINGER ships major updates every 6-12 months. Five minutes of menu review per patch prevents one bad session on changed defaults.

11 · Pro Tips

Compound habits across the long milsim arc.

  • Start in Joint Operations Learn the map, mechanics, and vendor system in PvE first. Transition to Warfare after 10-20 hours of confident PvE play.
  • Suppressors for solo play Suppressors reduce AI detection radius significantly. Mandatory for solo players going into high-risk zones.
  • Use the in-game Field Manual Click the book icon in the top-right UI for 110-page in-game manual. Reduces menu-friction during firefights; faster than alt-tabbing to wikis.
  • Stack tasks in the same area Plan task completion routes. Multiple tasks per region maximizes time-per-extraction; reduces back-and-forth helicopter calls.
  • Match ammo to armor Heavy plate (3+/4) requires armor-piercing ammo. Don’t waste high-cost rounds on light targets; conversely don’t fight armored AI with under-tier ammo.
  • Helicopter route awareness Helicopters fly along predictable routes. Plan extraction LZs along less-contested approach paths. Hostile routes increase risk dramatically.
  • Take advantage of mode flexibility Learn risky missions in PvE; complete them efficiently. Then pull the same kit into Warfare for higher-stakes runs. The flexibility is core to GZW.
