Honkai: Star Rail

HoYoverse’s turn-based gacha RPG. Three years deep, nine Paths, infinite team compositions.

Welcome to the Cosmo strategy hub for Honkai: Star Rail. HoYoverse’s turn-based space-opera RPG launched April 26, 2023 and reached its third anniversary in April 2026 with Version 4.2 live. Star Rail combines classic turn-based combat with the gacha team-building depth HoYoverse refined across Genshin Impact: nine Paths (combat archetypes), seven Elements, deep relic systems, and endgame modes that scale across years of progression. Everything below is vanilla, mechanics-only knowledge: the combat loop, the Paths, elements and Weakness Break, notable characters, Light Cones, Relics, endgame modes, story worlds, Trailblaze Power and the daily routine, free-to-play strategy, and the pro tips that compound across the long arc of the game.

01 · The Combat Loop

Turn-based, Skill-Point-driven, Weakness-Break-centered.

  • Four-character parties Players build teams of four characters drawn from a roster of 70+ playable units (and growing). Synergy between Path, element, and role decides team strength.
  • Turn order by SPD Characters and enemies act in order of Speed (SPD). Higher SPD characters act more often; SPD breakpoints (134, 143, 161, etc.) define competitive team building.
  • Skill Points: the team-wide resource The whole team shares one pool of Skill Points (max 5). Basic Attacks generate them; Skills consume them. Managing the SP economy is half of Star Rail combat.
  • Weakness Break is the core mechanic Every enemy has Toughness (a yellow bar) with elemental weaknesses. Hitting an enemy with their weakness element reduces Toughness; breaking it deals damage and applies a debuff.
  • Ultimates ignore turn order Ultimates fire instantly when Energy is full and the player triggers them. They do not consume the character’s turn; chain ultimates to set up Weakness Breaks and burst windows.
  • Technique outside combat Each character has a Technique used before combat starts (visible while exploring). Some grant pre-combat damage; others apply buffs at battle start.
  • Three core combat scenarios Standard story combat (low difficulty), endgame combat (high stat checks), and roguelike combat (Simulated Universe / Divergent Universe with relic-style buffs).

02 · The Nine Paths

Combat archetypes that define a character’s role.

Damage Paths Destruction, Hunt, Erudition
  • Destruction (multi-target physical/AoE)
  • Hunt (single-target high damage)
  • Erudition (AoE damage)
Bring
Strong DPS units and supporting buffers/debuffers.
Take
The main damage output for the team. Most parties have one Damage Path character as the primary carry.

Damage Paths consume the most resources and Skill Points. Build them first for endgame content.

Support Paths Harmony, Nihility, Remembrance
  • Harmony (buffs allies, e.g. Bronya, Sparkle, Robin)
  • Nihility (debuffs enemies, e.g. Black Swan, Acheron-support)
  • Remembrance (added 3.0; uses Memosprites to assist)
Bring
Team-building intent and willingness to play characters that don’t top the damage charts.
Take
Multiplicative buffs that amplify DPS performance significantly. The unsung heroes of endgame clears.

Harmony characters often double team damage output. The most undervalued role by new players.

Sustain Paths Preservation, Abundance
  • Preservation (shield-based, e.g. Aventurine, Fu Xuan)
  • Abundance (heal-based, e.g. Luocha, Huohuo, Lingsha)
Bring
Patience for slower-paced runs and the willingness to play defensively.
Take
Team survivability that lets DPS characters take risks. Required for most endgame content.

Every team needs one Sustain character (Preservation or Abundance). Skipping the sustain slot is the most common new-player mistake.

Elation Path (4.0+) New path introduced in Version 4.0 on Planarcadia
  • Yao Guang (Elation 5-star)
  • Sparxie (Elation 5-star)
  • Silver Wolf Lv.999, Evanescia (4.2 releases)
Bring
Curiosity about Star Rail’s newest mechanic and willingness to learn its synergy patterns.
Take
A fresh combat archetype focused on chaos and unpredictability; pairs differently with existing Paths.

Elation is the newest Path. Mechanically distinct from existing Paths; still being meta-explored as of mid-2026.

03 · Elements & Weakness Break

Seven elements; each enemy has 1-3 weaknesses.

ElementWeakness Break EffectBest DPS Use
PhysicalApplies Bleed (DoT scaling on enemy HP)Heavy single-target burst with bleed scaling. Strong vs high-HP bosses.
FireApplies Burn (flat DoT)Reliable damage-over-time. Strong vs Toughness-heavy enemies.
IceApplies Frozen (1-turn skip + minor damage)Crowd control with damage. Useful for delaying enemy actions.
LightningApplies Shock (DoT + chance to apply on subsequent turns)Sustained DoT for long encounters. Black Swan team flagship.
WindApplies Wind Shear (stacking DoT)Stacking damage that scales with hits. Pair with rapid-attack DPS.
QuantumApplies Entanglement (delayed turn + damage spike)Heavy delay + burst damage. Excellent vs single bosses.
ImaginaryApplies Imprisonment (full turn skip + SPD reduction)Strongest debuff break. Disables boss turns; team-defining utility.

04 · Notable Characters by Path

A handful of the most-relevant characters as of Version 4.2.

  • Destruction DPS Blade (Wind), Imbibitor Lunae (Imaginary), Firefly (Fire), Phainon (Physical). Self-sustaining damage carries.
  • Hunt DPS Seele (Quantum), Dr. Ratio (Imaginary), Boothill (Physical), Feixiao (Wind), Yunli (Physical). Single-target burst specialists.
  • Erudition DPS Herta (Ice), Jing Yuan (Lightning), Rappa (Imaginary), Anaxa (Quantum). AoE-focused; strong in mob-clearing endgame.
  • Harmony Support Bronya (Wind), Sparkle (Quantum), Robin (Physical), Sunday (Imaginary), Tribbie (Imaginary). Buff-amplifier specialists.
  • Nihility Support Pela (Ice), Silver Wolf (Quantum), Welt (Imaginary), Black Swan (Wind), Acheron (Lightning, hybrid DPS). Debuff specialists.
  • Preservation Sustain Fu Xuan (Quantum), Aventurine (Imaginary), Gepard (Ice), March 7th (Ice). Shield-based survival.
  • Abundance Sustain Luocha (Imaginary), Huohuo (Wind), Bailu (Lightning), Lingsha (Fire), Hyacine (Wind). Heal-based survival.

05 · Light Cones (Weapons)

Each character equips one Light Cone of matching Path.

  • Path-locked equipment A Hunt Light Cone only works on Hunt characters. Equipping a wrong-Path Light Cone disables its passive effect; only the base stats apply.
  • 5-star Signature Light Cones Each limited 5-star character has a Signature 5-star Light Cone with massive synergy effects. Strongest possible weapon for that character; pull rate identical to character banners.
  • 4-star Battle Pass Light Cones Monthly Battle Pass rewards a 4-star Light Cone of your choice. Often best-in-slot for budget setups; reliable progression for free-to-play players.
  • Standard 5-star Light Cones Available from the standard banner pool. Reliable backups when signature Light Cones are unavailable; some are top-tier for specific characters.
  • F2P 4-star alternatives Many 4-star Light Cones perform within 5-10 percent of 5-star signatures. Free-to-play players can clear all endgame content with 4-star Light Cones.
  • Superimpose to S5 Stack duplicate Light Cones to Superimpose Level 5 (S5) for maximum passive strength. 4-star Light Cones reach S5 fast through Battle Pass and shop purchases.
  • Light Cone level cap matches character Level cap for Light Cones matches the character’s Ascension level. Don’t over-invest in Light Cones for characters you haven’t Ascended.

06 · Relics & Planar Ornaments

The deepest progression layer in Star Rail.

  • Relics: 4-piece sets Each character equips 4 Relic pieces (Head, Hands, Body, Feet). Wearing 2 or 4 pieces of the same set unlocks set bonuses.
  • Planar Ornaments: 2-piece sets Two additional pieces (Planar Sphere, Link Rope). 2-piece set bonus only; different sets from Relics.
  • Stats: Main + 4 substats Each piece rolls a Main Stat (Slot-restricted) and 4 random Substats. Substats can roll on enhancement; final Substat distribution is the main optimization grind.
  • Best-in-slot per character Each character has optimal Relic stats: Crit Rate/DMG for most DPS, Effect Hit Rate for debuff supports, HP/DEF for tanks. Look up per-character builds before committing materials.
  • Cavern of Corrosion farming Relics come from Cavern of Corrosion stages. Each Cavern drops a specific Relic set; choose the Cavern that matches your team’s build needs.
  • Self-Modeling Resin A consumable that lets you select a specific Main Stat for a Relic. Limited supply; save for high-priority builds.
  • Wishful Resin (added 3.0) New Relic crafting consumable that lets you customize sub-stats. Reduces the RNG grind significantly; spend carefully.

07 · Endgame Modes

Five rotating endgame modes for high-end progression.

  • Memory of Chaos The classic endgame mode. 12 stages, each requires clearing two halves with separate teams. Resets every 6 weeks; clear all 12 for maximum Stellar Jade rewards.
  • Pure Fiction AoE-focused endgame. Enemies spawn in waves; team must clear quickly. Rewards Erudition and AoE-friendly compositions.
  • Apocalyptic Shadow Boss-focused endgame. Two boss encounters per stage with specific mechanics. Rewards single-target DPS and Weakness-Break-heavy teams.
  • Simulated Universe Permanent roguelike mode. Random Blessings and Curios stack into broken builds over a single run. Path Blessings let you specialize per run.
  • Divergent Universe (3.0+) Successor to Simulated Universe. Adds Insight Mode (extra damage for blessings) and expanded Path content. Slowly replacing the older mode.
  • Forgotten Hall Predecessor to Memory of Chaos; permanently available for one-time clears. Good farming source for new accounts.
  • Cosmodyssey events Limited-time event endgame challenges. Usually shorter than Memory of Chaos but with unique mechanics. Always clear for free Stellar Jades.

08 · Story Worlds

Each world is a self-contained chapter with its own characters and lore.

  • Herta Space Station The first world. Introduces the Astral Express crew and the Stellaron concept. Short tutorial-paced content.
  • Jarilo-VI Second world. Frozen civilization above ground (Belobog), underworld below (Underworld). Bronya, Seele, Gepard, Natasha home world.
  • Xianzhou Luofu Third world. Chinese mythology-inspired Xianzhou Alliance ship. Houses Jing Yuan, Dan Heng (the player’s long-companion), Imbibitor Lunae, Yunli, and many more.
  • Penacony (2.0–2.7) Fourth world. Dream-themed entertainment planet; intricate mystery storyline. Houses Acheron, Aventurine, Black Swan, Firefly, Robin, Sunday, and others.
  • Amphoreus (3.0+) Fifth world. Greek mythology-inspired arc with the Path of Remembrance. Houses Aglaea, Castorice, Phainon, The Herta, Hyacine, and Memosprites.
  • Planarcadia (4.0+) Sixth world. Amusement-park themed; introduces the Path of Elation. Houses Yao Guang, Sparxie, Mortenax Blade, and ongoing characters.
  • Trailblaze Missions Each world unlocks Trailblaze Missions (the main story). Completing them rewards major Stellar Jade and unlocks endgame access.

09 · Trailblaze Power & Daily Routine

The resin equivalent and the time investment per day.

  • Trailblaze Power: 240 max Star Rail’s stamina system. Regenerates 1 per 6 minutes (240/day). Spend on Calyx (XP/Credits), Stagnant Shadow (character traces), Echo of War (Light Cones), Cavern of Corrosion (Relics).
  • Daily Training (DT) Daily missions worth 500 Activity points. Completing 100% gives 60 Stellar Jade per day. The minimum daily routine.
  • Stagnant Shadow bosses Sub-bosses that drop character ascension materials. Each character has a specific Stagnant Shadow associated with their element. Plan farming by team composition.
  • Echo of War (weekly) Weekly boss fights for Light Cone materials. 3 free clears per week; each gives high-tier Light Cone trace materials.
  • Assignments Send characters on background missions for passive rewards (XP, Credits, materials). Set up assignments at login; collect rewards on next login.
  • Mail and events check Login bonuses, event banners, and HoYoLAB rewards arrive via mail. Five minutes per day prevents missing limited-time freebies.
  • Reserved Trailblaze Power Power above 240 stores in Reserved Trailblaze Power (up to 2400). Useful if you can’t log in daily; spend on weekends.

10 · Free-to-Play Strategy

Star Rail is generous; budget your pulls.

  • Save for Signature banners F2P players accumulate roughly enough Stellar Jade for one character + one Light Cone every 6 weeks. Prioritize new releases that fit your team gaps.
  • Pity carries between banners 50/50 system: lose pity on the standard pool, win pity on the limited character. The next pull on a 5-star is guaranteed limited. Track pity carefully.
  • Standard 5-star Selector Star Rail offers a free Standard 5-Star Selector every anniversary. Choose carefully: a strong Bronya or Welt can carry teams for years.
  • Free 5-star characters Trailblazer (multiple Paths), free 5-star Selector at 4.0+ anniversary, event rewards. F2P players have access to multiple 5-star characters without pulling.
  • Memory of Chaos hard floors Memory of Chaos 12 and Pure Fiction 4 are tuned for whaled accounts. F2P players can comfortably clear 8-10 floors with optimized 4-star Light Cones.
  • Embrace 4-star characters Tingyun, Pela, Asta, Gallagher, Lynx, March 7th, Yukong, Sushang, Natasha: all clear endgame content with optimization. Don’t skip them.
  • Battle Pass for value Battle Pass is the highest-value purchase for F2P-leaning players. 4-star Light Cone selector + Stellar Jade + Credits per cycle.

11 · Pro Tips

Compound habits across the long arc of the game.

  • One team deep, then expand New players should build one team to 80+ levels with full Traces and decent Relics before splitting resources. Spread thin equals weak everywhere.
  • Speed tuning is the highest skill SPD breakpoints (134, 143, 161, 200+) define competitive team building. Calculate target SPD before grinding Relics.
  • Always have a Sustain A team without a Preservation or Abundance character dies in 90 percent of endgame content. The Sustain slot is not optional.
  • Watch theorycrafters The Star Rail community on YouTube and Reddit posts daily theorycrafting. Two hours per week of meta content saves dozens of hours of misallocation.
  • Skip if you’re unsure Banners rerun. If a character is unclear in value, skip; the next banner gives you another chance. Pulling on bad fits is the highest-cost F2P mistake.
  • Use the Astral Express auto-battle Daily farming for Calyx and Caverns auto-battles. Saves real-life time; the rewards are identical to manual play.
  • Take breaks Star Rail is a marathon, not a sprint. The story takes years to unfold; pace yourself through arcs rather than rushing to endgame.
