Insurgency: Sandstorm

New World Interactive’s tactical FPS. Eight years stable; back to active updates with Operation: Clear Sight (Feb 2026).

Welcome to the Cosmo strategy hub for Insurgency: Sandstorm. New World Interactive launched Sandstorm in 2018 and built it into one of the most-respected tactical realistic FPS games of the era. Currently Update 1.20 "Operation: Clear Sight" (February 24, 2026) returns the game to active development after several months of silence. The 4-Year Anniversary Edition and Year 4 Pass extend ongoing content. Two factions (Security forces and Insurgents) clash across Middle Eastern-inspired urban environments. Realistic ballistics, minimal HUD, and severe lethality define the gameplay tone. Everything below is vanilla, mechanics-only knowledge.

01 · The Combat Loop

Realistic tactical combat with minimal UI.

  • Realistic FPS combat Sandstorm emphasizes realism. One or two shots can kill; recoil is significant; movement is restricted by weight and stamina. Skill-focused, not arcade.
  • Minimal HUD No mini-map, no crosshair, no enemy outline. Players rely on landmarks, sound, and tactical positioning. The defining feature of Insurgency.
  • Two factions Security forces (Coalition military) and Insurgents. Each has unique weapon roster, equipment, and aesthetic. Faction-balanced combat.
  • Class-based loadouts Choose a class per match: Rifleman, Breacher, Marksman, Demolitions, Observer, Commander, etc. Class determines weapon access and equipment.
  • Round-based mode structure Most modes are round-based. Each round resets gear; team manages collective resources across rounds.
  • Tactical voice communication Proximity voice + team voice. Coordinate carefully; loud players are heard by enemies.
  • Cooperative AI (Co-op mode) Co-op Checkpoint mode pits up to 8 players against AI. Lower stress than PvP; great for learning maps and tactics.

02 · The Two Factions

Security and Insurgents; balanced but distinct.

Security Forces (Coalition) Western-style military
  • M4A1 / M16A4 assault rifles
  • M249 light machine gun
  • M40A6 sniper rifle
  • Standard-issue tactical equipment
  • Romero T8 reflex sight (recent addition)
Bring
Military aesthetic preference and willingness to coordinate as conventional forces.
Take
Access to standard NATO weapons and modern equipment. Tactical balance favoring precision.

Security tends to be the "intuitive" choice for players familiar with mainstream military FPS. Weapons handle as expected from Modern Warfare-style titles.

Insurgents Asymmetric forces with diverse weapons
  • AK-47 / AKM rifles
  • PKM machine gun
  • Mosin-Nagant sniper
  • IEDs and improvised explosives
  • PKO-6 reflex sight (recent addition)
Bring
Asymmetric playstyle preference and willingness to engage with diverse weapon types.
Take
Access to Eastern Bloc and improvised weapons. Different recoil patterns, sound profiles.

Insurgents reward variety. Mix-and-match weapons across engagement ranges; less predictable than Security loadouts.

03 · Classes & Loadouts

Each class has specific equipment access.

  • Rifleman (the default) Standard assault rifle and basic equipment. Versatile mid-range engagement; foundation of most teams.
  • Breacher (CQB specialist) Shotgun or SMG-focused. Breach buildings; clear close-quarters threats. Strong in urban combat.
  • Marksman (long-range) Designated marksman rifle or sniper. Long-range engagement; positioning-dependent. Quiet eliminations.
  • Demolitions Anti-vehicle and area-denial. RPG-7, Carl Gustaf, mines. Counter to enemy vehicles and grouped infantry.
  • Observer (Commander partner) Calls in fire support; works directly with Commander. Tactical role; less common in casual play.
  • Commander Calls in air strikes, gunship runs, and artillery. Game-changing utility; coordination with Observer essential.
  • Other classes Advisor (Insurgent commander analog), Gunner (LMG specialist), Squad Leader. Each fills specific tactical role.

05 · Game Modes

Multiple PvP and PvE formats.

  • Push (the flagship mode) Attackers (one team) push forward to capture objective points. Defenders try to hold. Asymmetric; multi-stage; most-played mode.
  • Versus (symmetric) Both teams attack and defend simultaneously. Symmetric mode; balanced; competitive favorite.
  • Domination Capture and hold three control points. Smaller-scale; less common than Push.
  • Firefight Multiple rounds; round wins by capturing objective or eliminating all enemies. Tactical round-based.
  • Co-op Checkpoint (PvE) 8 players vs AI. Defend or attack checkpoints; standard PvE mode. Lower stress; learn maps.
  • Co-op Outpost (PvE) Defensive co-op mode. Hold a position against escalating AI waves. Survival-focused.
  • Co-op Hardcore PvE on Hardcore difficulty. Reduced HUD, friendly fire enabled, no health regen. Realism-focused; veteran territory.

06 · Maps

Middle Eastern-inspired urban environments.

  • Hideout Mountain village map. Multiple buildings; vertical engagement; mid-range to CQB.
  • Refinery Industrial complex. Long sightlines outdoors; CQB inside buildings. Versatile combat zones.
  • Crossing Urban combat across a market and bridge. Iconic Insurgency Sandstorm map; multi-layer combat.
  • Outskirts Border town. Open terrain mixed with dense buildings. Long sniper sightlines; CQB pockets.
  • Hillside Hill-and-canyon environment. Long-range engagement; elevation matters.
  • Farmhouse Rural farm complex. Multiple wood-frame buildings; CQB-favored; tactical positioning.
  • New Hold map (1.21, upcoming) Police station theme. Coming in the next 1.21 patch after Operation: Clear Sight.

07 · Combat Tactics

Realistic FPS rewards careful play.

  • One-shot lethality Headshots kill instantly. Center-mass shots often kill with 1-2 rounds. Spray-and-pray dies fast.
  • Stamina management Sprinting drains stamina. Aim accuracy reduced when stamina is low. Walk when not engaging; sprint to reposition.
  • Lean and peek Lean keys (Q/E) let you peek corners without exposing yourself. Master peeking; minimize exposure time.
  • Suppressors and silenced kills Suppressors reduce sound profile. Helps in stealth approaches; doesn’t make you invisible, just less audible.
  • Audio identification Footsteps, weapon sounds, equipment audio all reveal player positions. Listen before engaging; verify before shooting.
  • Voice communication discipline Proximity voice is heard by enemies. Use sparingly during firefights; communicate via team voice only.
  • Pre-fire and angle holding Common engagement points are predictable. Pre-fire angles; hold corners; force enemies into your sights.

08 · Operation: Clear Sight (Current)

February 24, 2026 update.

  • Return after silence Operation: Clear Sight (Update 1.20) marked the return after several months of silence from New World Interactive. Community welcomed back with enthusiasm.
  • New free sights Romero T8 reflex sight for Security; PKO-6 reflex sight for Insurgents. Free additions to existing weapons.
  • Story update "The Jackal has resurfaced in the city, leading a surge of insurgent forces toward a high-value intelligence target." GRS operators dispatched.
  • Premium cosmetic DLC New premium cosmetic sets available in 4-Year Anniversary Edition, Year 4 Pass, or for individual purchase.
  • 4-Year Anniversary Edition Bundle including premium cosmetic DLC packs. Discounted aggregate; cosmetic-only impact.
  • Year 4 Pass Season-pass-style annual content pass. Cosmetic items released throughout the year; aggregate value for engaged players.
  • Challenge updates and patches Updated challenges (achievement-style goals); various graphical bug fixes and level design adjustments.

09 · Progression & Cosmetics

Cosmetic-focused live service.

  • XP and level progression Earn XP through matches. Level up for class unlocks (some weapon attachments class-gated).
  • Cosmetic items only Insurgency: Sandstorm avoids pay-to-win. All cosmetics are aesthetic; gameplay balance preserved.
  • Cosmetic categories Headwear, body cosmetics, weapon skins. Customize Security or Insurgent appearance separately.
  • Coin currency In-game currency earned through gameplay. Unlock cosmetics; cosmetic shop rotation.
  • DLC packs Premium DLC adds large cosmetic batches at once. Faction-specific cosmetics; bundle pricing.
  • Mod editor support Community modding via Steam Workshop. Custom maps, modifications, server-side mods.
  • Community servers Self-hosted dedicated servers. Custom rules, modded experiences, RP server variants.

10 · Audio & Settings

Audio is the meta in realistic FPS.

  • Headphones critical Insurgency audio (footsteps, weapon sounds, distant fire) is the survival meta. Quality stereo headphones save lives.
  • Master volume around 60–70 percent Insurgency peaks loud during firefights. Higher master volume catches distant audio better than typical FPS.
  • Field of view 90 Standard for tactical realistic shooters. Wider feels arcade; narrower restricts peripheral.
  • Mouse sensitivity low Realistic shooter rewards deliberate aim. 800 DPI and low in-game sensitivity is competitive standard.
  • Performance tuning Sandstorm is well-optimized. Most modern PCs run at 144+ FPS at high settings.
  • Push-to-talk PTT for team voice; proximity voice is always-on by default. Use PTT discipline to avoid enemy detection.
  • Verify after every Operation New World Interactive ships Operations periodically. Five minutes of menu review per Operation prevents one bad session.

11 · Pro Tips

Compound habits across the long Sandstorm arc.

  • Walk; don’t sprint Sprinting drains stamina and creates loud audio. Walk in combat zones; reposition quickly only when necessary.
  • Lean and peek; never expose Use Q/E lean keys. Peek angles without committing your body to the line of fire.
  • Master one map first Pick one map; play 50+ matches on it. Master sightlines, common angles, and engagement zones before expanding.
  • Listen to footsteps Footsteps reveal enemy positions. Pause; listen; verify before engaging. Saves more lives than mechanical aim.
  • Use suppressors for stealth Suppressors reduce sound profile significantly. Mandatory for stealth approaches; helpful in any role.
  • Coordinate Commander + Observer These two classes work together. Commander calls fire support; Observer enables it. Bad teams skip these; good teams coordinate them.
  • Practice in Co-op first Co-op Checkpoint mode is the learning ground. Master maps, mechanics, and class loadouts in PvE before pushing into PvP.
