GGG’s ARPG sequel. Early Access since December 2024; 1.0 expected late 2026 with full free-to-play launch.
Welcome to the Cosmo strategy hub for Path of Exile 2. Grinding Gear Games launched the Early Access of their long-awaited sequel December 6, 2024 and has shipped four major updates since (currently Patch 0.4 "The Last of the Druids"). Patch 0.5 "Return of the Ancients" launches May 29, 2026; the full 1.0 release is expected late 2026 after ExileCon (November 7-8). The sequel preserves the deep ARPG of the original (thousand-node Passive Trees, deep Skill Gem systems, league-based seasonal resets, hardcore difficulty, ethical microtransactions) while modernizing combat with directional rolls, parries, and a slower, more deliberate pace. Everything below is vanilla, mechanics-only knowledge.
Figure 1. Section 07 of this page is "Endgame: Atlas & Mapping". These are the first five of the seven entries it lists.
01 · The ARPG Loop
Campaign, then endless endgame.
Six-act campaignSix Acts of campaign content (Acts 1-3 currently playable; Acts 5-6 incoming with 1.0). Each Act introduces new zones, bosses, mechanics, and quest items.
Souls-like action combatSlower than PoE1; emphasizes dodge rolls, parries, and positioning. Boss fights are puzzles; trash mobs still die fast.
Loot-driven progressionKill enemies; collect items; equip the best. Mods on items are randomized; perfect rolls are extremely rare. The chase for perfect gear is endgame.
Skill Gem systemActive and Support gems socket into equipment. Combine actives with supports for unique builds; every character has dozens of viable kits.
Passive Tree (1,500+ nodes)Massive shared Passive Tree where each class starts in a different location. Travel through nodes for stat bonuses and key passives. Defines your build identity.
Ascendancy classesEach base class has 3 Ascendancy options (each Ascendancy is a sub-class with unique passives). Choose at Lab; commit to a build identity.
League cycle (every 3-6 months)New leagues bring fresh content and reset the economy. Currently 0.4 Fate of the Vaal ends May 25; 0.5 Return of the Ancients launches May 29, 2026.
02 · The Six Acts
Currently 3 Acts; Acts 4-6 phased in.
Act 1: Riverbank to OghamTutorial-paced introduction. Witch awakens; basic enemies; Act 1 bosses include the Devourer and the Bloated Miller. Establishes movement, dodge, parry.
Act 2: The Vastiri DesertPersian/Egyptian-themed desert. Centaurs, vipers, and ancient ruins. Act 2 bosses are more mechanically complex; introduces the Trial of the Sekhemas (Ascendancy gateway).
Act 3: UtzaalMesoamerican-inspired jungle. The Vaal civilization’s ruins; complex mob abilities; Act 3 bosses test post-Ascendancy build power.
Cruel mode (Acts 1-3 replay)After completing Act 3, replay Acts 1-3 on Cruel difficulty (higher enemy levels and rewards). The current campaign’s "post-game" until Acts 4-6 release.
Act 4 (Unknown release window)Planned for 1.0 release window. Will continue the storyline; specific theme not yet revealed.
Act 5 (with 0.5 or 0.6)Tentative release in Patch 0.5 or 0.6 timeframe. Closer to 1.0 launch; will reveal more campaign content.
Act 6 (with 1.0)The final campaign Act. Reserved for the 1.0 full release; expected to be shorter and conclude the storyline.
03 · The Eight Classes
Eight base classes; eleven planned for 1.0.
Available at LaunchEight playable classes as of 0.4
Witch (Intelligence)
Ranger (Dexterity)
Sorceress (Intelligence)
Warrior (Strength)
Monk (Dex/Int hybrid)
Mercenary (Str/Dex hybrid)
Huntress (Dex)
Druid (Strength/Dex)
Bring
Curiosity about the variety of playstyles and willingness to experiment.
Take
A character class that matches your preferred combat archetype. Each unlocks dozens of build variations.
Witch and Druid are the newest and arguably most-meta classes as of 0.4. Druid added with shapeshifting mechanics (wolf, bear, wyvern forms).
Coming with 1.0 or Future PatchesFour more classes expected
Duelist (Strength/Dex)
Templar (Strength/Intelligence)
Shadow (Dex/Intelligence)
Marauder (Pure Strength)
Bring
Patience for the 1.0 release timeline.
Take
Full class roster matching the original Path of Exile design.
Duelist heavily speculated for Patch 0.5 or 0.6 timing. Marauder may arrive with 1.0 alongside two-handed weapon types.
04 · Ascendancies
Three sub-classes per base class.
Sekhemas Trial (early Ascendancy)In Act 2, complete the Trial of the Sekhemas to earn your first Ascendancy points. Multiple sub-trials of increasing difficulty.
Chaos Trial (later Ascendancy)Endgame Ascendancy trial via Sekhemas Ultimatum. More demanding; rewards more Ascendancy points.
Choose one Ascendancy per characterAfter your first trial, commit to one of three Ascendancies for your class. Cannot be changed; defines build endgame.
Witch AscendanciesInfernalist (fire summons), Blood Mage (life-cost spells), Lich (planned, post-0.5). Each builds the Witch class differently.
1,500+ nodes; shared across all classes; class starts in unique location.
Massive Passive TreePoE2 retains the shared 1,500+ node passive skill tree. Each class has a different starting position; pathing through nodes shapes character stats.
Stat clusters by regionTree regions cluster around themes: physical damage, elemental damage, spell power, life, energy shield, attack speed, etc. Plan pathing for your build identity.
Notables and KeystonesNotable passives provide major bonuses (e.g., +50% physical damage with one-handed swords). Keystones provide game-changing trade-offs (e.g., zero life, double damage).
Refunding pointsEach level grants 1 Passive Point. Use Orbs of Regret to refund points individually. Major respec is expensive but doable.
Build planning is the meta-gameUse Passive Tree planners (community sites) before committing. Top builds plan every node in advance; reactive builds suffer from inefficient pathing.
Jewel sockets in the treeSpecific tree nodes are jewel sockets. Insert magic/rare/unique jewels for additional bonuses; some jewels are build-defining.
Tree paths reward focused buildsHybrid characters paying for too many stat types tend to perform worse than focused builds. Commit to a damage type and resist pulling random nodes.
06 · Skill Gems & Support Gems
The build customization system.
Active Skill GemsEach Active Gem provides one ability (Fireball, Ice Shot, Shield Crush, etc.). Slot into weapons/armor sockets to use them.
Support Gems modify ActivesSlot Support Gems alongside Actives for modifications: Multistrike, Greater Multiple Projectiles, Faster Casting, Spell Echo, etc.
Uncut Gems and Skill RefundsEarned through gameplay. PoE2 simplified gem progression compared to PoE1; less RNG; more deterministic build crafting.
Gem levelingGems level with the character. Higher gem levels increase damage and effects. Plan gem level progression alongside character level.
Linking and socket colorsSockets on items must match gem colors. 5-link and 6-link sockets are the meta for high-power abilities; crafting them is expensive.
Auras and buffsSome Actives provide passive buffs (Hatred for cold damage, Wrath for lightning). Run 1-2 auras alongside main damage skill.
Movement skillsMovement-specific actives: Whirlwind, Lightning Warp, Frostblink. Essential for endgame mobility and dodging boss attacks.
07 · Endgame: Atlas & Mapping
Hundreds of hours of optional progression after the campaign.
Atlas of WorldsEndgame map system. Players progress through a network of "Maps" (procedurally-generated dungeons). Each Map can spawn unique boss variants.
Waystones (Map currency)Waystones open Maps. Higher-tier Waystones spawn harder Maps with better loot. Stockpile Waystones for efficient mapping.
Atlas Tree (0.5 overhaul)A specialized tree for Atlas progression. Patch 0.5 reworks the Atlas Tree significantly with the Return of the Ancients update.
Map ModsEach Map can spawn with modifiers: Reflect, Players Cannot Regenerate Life, etc. Higher-mod maps are harder but yield better loot.
Pinnacle BossesTop-tier bosses gated behind Map progression. Defeat them for unique items and lore content; the apex of build optimization.
Temple of Tul (Vaal Temple)Special endgame zone added in 0.4. Reaching it requires Atlas progression; rewards are themed around Vaal civilization items.
Vault and StorageStash Tabs (premium currency purchase) are the standard for endgame inventory management. F2P players can manage but with significant friction.
08 · League Mechanics
New mechanics every 3-6 months; reset the economy.
Fate of the Vaal (0.4)Current league mechanic (ending May 25, 2026). Vaal Temple-themed encounters with risk/reward Vaal challenges.
Return of the Ancients (0.5)Launching May 29, 2026. Endgame-focused league with reworked Atlas progression, new endgame systems, and a focus on permanent endgame depth.
Challenge tracks per leagueEach league has a 100-challenge progression track. Complete challenges for cosmetic rewards. Top players race to "40 challenges" for the most-coveted rewards.
Standard (permanent league)After a league ends, characters and items migrate to Standard. Permanent server with stable economy; the long-term home of all characters.
Hardcore leagueOne-death league. Die in Hardcore? Character migrates to Standard (Softcore). Hardcore players have a separate economy and ranking.
Solo Self-Found (SSF)Optional rule: no trading with other players. Find all loot yourself. Slower progression but pure self-sufficiency; popular with experienced players.
Patch 0.5 = last EA league before 1.00.5 is the final Early Access league before 1.0 launches. No 0.6 planned; 0.5 will run for an extended period through 1.0.
09 · Currency & Trade
Crafting consumables are the currency; trade is the economy.
No gold currencyCurrency in PoE2 is composed of crafting materials: Orb of Alchemy, Chaos Orb, Exalted Orb, Divine Orb, Mirror of Kalandra. Each has utility as both currency and crafting material.
Currency tiersLower-value: Scrolls of Wisdom, Portal Scrolls. Mid-value: Orb of Alchemy, Orb of Chance. High-value: Chaos Orb, Exalted Orb. Top-tier: Divine Orb, Mirror of Kalandra (rarest).
Crafting orbsOrbs modify items: Orb of Alteration rerolls magic items, Chaos Orb rerolls rare items, Exalted Orb adds a mod to rare items. Crafting is the path to perfect gear.
Player tradingPoE2 uses an in-game trade interface plus the official trade site. Search by mods; contact sellers; meet in-game to complete trades.
Trade rate inflationCurrency rates fluctuate by league. Early league: Divines worth 100+ Chaos. Late league: 200+ Chaos. Plan large purchases for the right phase.
Maps as currency tooSpecific Map types and qualities are tradeable. Stockpile rare Maps for trade; sell or use yourself depending on build needs.
Future Free-to-playPoE2 will transition from $30 EA Supporter Pack to permanent free-to-play in 1.0. Early Access purchases convert to in-game currency for stash tabs.
10 · Audio & Settings
PoE2 is GPU-heavy; tune for stability and clarity.
Headphones for combat audioDistinct enemy attack sounds let you dodge mechanics before visual cues complete. Critical for boss fights and high-mod Maps.
Master volume around 50–60 percentPoE2 peaks loud during combat and Vaal mechanics. Lower master volume preserves ambient sound headroom.
FPS lock or unlockPoE2 runs at variable framerates. Lock to monitor refresh rate (60/120/144) for consistent input; unlock for maximum responsiveness on high-end systems.
Texture quality and shadow tuningPoE2 is GPU-demanding at Ultra. Reduce shadows and post-processing for higher framerate in mob-dense encounters.
Custom keybind setupPoE2 supports custom keybinds. Map abilities to comfortable positions; the default WASD + spacebar is the foundation.
Sound mix sliderAudio menu lets you isolate Music, Combat, Voice. Reduce Music; amplify Combat for better situational awareness.
Verify after every patchGGG ships major updates every 3-6 months. Five minutes of menu review after each patch prevents one bad league start.
11 · Pro Tips
Compound habits across the long PoE arc.
Follow a build guide for your first characterPoE2 has thousands of build variations. Pick a top-tier league-start build (Maxroll, PoE2 build guides) and follow it through the campaign.
Don’t skip TrialsSekhemas Trial and Chaos Trial unlock Ascendancy points. Each is a major power spike; never skip them.
Stockpile crafting orbsDon’t spend crafting orbs early. Save Chaos and Exalted Orbs for the mid-to-late game when crafting becomes valuable.
Use the trade sitePoE2’s trade site (after 1.0) is the most-efficient way to acquire gear. Browse, buy, sell. Avoid manual whispers; use the standardized interface.
Watch endgame streamersStreamers like Mathil, Ziggy, and Karvarousku stream endgame builds. Two hours per week of high-rank content teaches mechanics fast.
Embrace deaths earlyNew characters die a lot. Each death teaches mechanics. Don’t restart at low levels; push through and learn.
Plan for the 1.0 transitionPatch 0.5 runs until 1.0 launches (late 2026). Use 0.5 to learn endgame; the 1.0 reset will bring expanded content but reset progress.
