GGG’s legendary free-to-play ARPG. Twelve years deep, still the genre standard for build depth.
Welcome to the Cosmo strategy hub for Path of Exile. Grinding Gear Games launched the original Path of Exile in 2013 and built it into one of the deepest action RPGs ever made. Currently League 3.28 "Mirage" (started March 6, 2026). The next league is expected around early July 2026 after the Mirage League runs its full cycle. ExileCon 2026 is scheduled for November 7-8 (NZT) and will likely preview future content. Despite GGG balancing development between Path of Exile 1 and Path of Exile 2, the original continues to receive major league launches every 3-4 months. 1,500+ Passive Tree nodes, 200+ unique skill gem combinations, 19 Ascendancy classes, and a player-driven economy define the genre standard. Everything below is vanilla, mechanics-only knowledge.
Figure 1. Section 03 of this page is "The Seven Base Classes". These are the four entries it lists.
01 · The ARPG Loop
Top-down combat, deep build crafting, league-based cycles.
Top-down isometric ARPGClassic Diablo-style perspective. Click-to-move, skill-cast, loot pickup. The genre standard since the original Diablo II era.
10-act campaignActs 1-10 form the campaign. Story-driven progression through Wraeclast (the cursed continent). Beats lead from prison-escape to apex-confrontation across all 10 acts.
Loot-driven progressionDefeat enemies; collect items; equip the best. Items have random mods; perfect rolls are extremely rare. The endgame chase.
Skill Gem systemActive and Support gems socket into equipment. Combine actives with supports for unique builds. Every character has hundreds of viable kits.
Passive Tree (massive)Shared 1,500+ node Passive Tree where each class starts in a different location. Pathing through nodes shapes character identity.
Ascendancy classesEach base class has 3 Ascendancy options. Each Ascendancy is a sub-class with unique passives. Choose at Labyrinth; commits to build identity.
League cycle (every 3-4 months)New leagues bring fresh content, mechanics, and economy resets. Currently 3.28 Mirage; next league expected early July 2026.
02 · The 10-Act Campaign

Mana management and willingness to cast spells from range.
Take
Energy Shield scaling, spell power, elemental damage. The mage classes.
Witch Necromancer is the classic minion-master build. Occultist is the chaos/curse specialist; Elementalist for pure elemental damage.
Hybrid ClassMulti-stat versatility
Scion (Ascendant)
Bring
Patience for hybrid builds and willingness to spread stats.
Take
Single Ascendancy combining traits from other classes. Less specialized but most flexible.
Scion Ascendant is often considered intermediate-advanced. New players should start with single-stat classes.
04 · Passive Tree & Build Crafting
1,500+ nodes; shared across all classes.
Massive shared treePath of Exile’s defining feature. 1,500+ passive nodes; all classes share the same tree but start in different locations. Pathing defines builds.
Stat clusters by regionTree regions cluster around themes: physical damage, elemental damage, spell power, life, energy shield, attack speed. Plan pathing for your build identity.
Notables and KeystonesNotable passives provide major bonuses (e.g., +30% physical damage with one-handed swords). Keystones provide game-changing trade-offs (e.g., Pain Attunement, Iron Reflexes).
Refunding points (Orbs of Regret)Each level grants 1 Passive Point. Use Orbs of Regret to refund individual points. Major respec is expensive but doable.
Build planning sitesPath of Building (POB) is the de-facto build planning tool. Plan complete builds before executing; saves dozens of hours of suboptimal play.
Jewel sockets in the treeSpecific tree nodes are jewel sockets. Insert magic/rare/unique jewels for additional bonuses; some jewels are build-defining.
Build paths reward focusTrying to hybrid too many stat types weakens the build. Commit to a damage type and resist pulling random nodes.
05 · Skill Gems & Support Gems
The customization system.
Active Skill GemsEach Active Gem provides one ability (Fireball, Ice Spear, Cyclone, etc.). Slot into weapons/armor sockets to use them.
Support Gems modify ActivesSlot Support Gems alongside Actives for modifications: Greater Multiple Projectiles, Spell Echo, Increased Critical Strikes, etc.
Gem levelingGems level with the character. Higher gem levels increase damage and effects.
Linking and socket colorsSockets on items must match gem colors. 5-link and 6-link sockets are the meta for high-power abilities; crafting them is expensive.
Awakened Support GemsHigher-tier versions of Support Gems. Drop from specific endgame bosses; significant power increase; expensive currency to acquire.
Movement skillsMovement-specific actives: Whirling Blades, Flame Dash, Leap Slam, Lightning Warp. Essential for endgame mobility.
Auras and buffsSome Actives provide passive buffs (Hatred for cold damage, Wrath for lightning). Run 1-2 auras alongside main damage skill.
06 · Ascendancy Classes
19 sub-classes; powerful specializations.
Labyrinth trialsComplete 6 Labyrinth trials in Acts 3, 6, 9, plus optional Merciless and Eternal trials. Each grants Ascendancy progress.
Three Ascendancy choices per classMarauder: Berserker, Chieftain, Juggernaut. Witch: Necromancer, Elementalist, Occultist. Choose one per character; commits to build identity.
Endgame Ascendancy nodesEach Ascendancy has 8 nodes spread across multiple Labyrinth difficulties. Unlock progressively as you complete harder Labyrinths.
Ascendant (Scion only)Scion’s Ascendancy lets you choose mini-bonus from another class’s Ascendancy. Hybrid customization; tactical complexity.
Refunding Ascendancy (Vorici)Limited refund options. Most Ascendancy choices are commits; plan carefully before completing the Labyrinth.
Phrecia Ascendancies (Legacy of Phrecia event)Special event Ascendancies from Legacy of Phrecia. May influence future league design or Ascendancy reworks.
07 · Endgame: Atlas of Worlds
The endgame mapping system.
Atlas of WorldsEndgame mapping system. Players progress through a network of "Maps" (procedurally-generated dungeons). Tier-based difficulty progression.
Map Tiers (T1-T16)T1 maps are easy; T16 maps are extreme endgame. Each tier increases enemy difficulty and reward potential.
Atlas TreeA separate passive tree for endgame mapping. Customize which league mechanics spawn, which boss types appear, and which loot pools drop.
Atlas BossesPinnacle bosses: Shaper, Elder, Conquerors, Eater of Worlds, Searing Exarch, Maven, Sirus. Each requires specific gear/build investment.
Map ModsEach Map can spawn with modifiers: Reflect, Players Cannot Regenerate Life, etc. Higher-mod maps are harder but yield better loot.
Sextants and ScarabsAtlas customization items. Sextants add map modifiers; Scarabs guarantee specific content. Endgame map-cycling depth.
Stash Tabs (premium)Stash Tabs (premium currency purchase) are the standard for endgame inventory management. F2P players can manage but with significant friction.
08 · Currency & Trade
Crafting consumables are the currency.
No gold currencyCurrency in PoE is composed of crafting materials: Orb of Alchemy, Chaos Orb, Exalted Orb, Divine Orb, Mirror of Kalandra. Each has dual utility as both currency and crafting.
Crafting orbsOrbs modify items: Orb of Alteration rerolls magic items, Chaos Orb rerolls rare items, Exalted Orb adds a mod to rare items. Crafting is the path to perfect gear.
Player tradingThe official trade site (pathofexile.com/trade) lets you search by mods. Whisper sellers; meet in-game; complete trades. The economy is fluid and active.
Foulborn Uniques (3.28 Mirage)Notable unique items from the Mirage League. Specific drops to chase; check current league meta.
Currency rates fluctuateEarly league: Divines worth 100+ Chaos. Late league: 200+ Chaos. Plan large purchases for the right phase.
Standard league economyAfter league ends, characters and items migrate to Standard. Permanent economy; long-term wealth accumulation.
09 · Modes & Leagues
Standard, Hardcore, SSF, plus league-specific.
Standard (permanent league)After leagues end, characters migrate here. Stable, growing economy; the long-term home of all characters.
Hardcore (one-death league)Die in Hardcore? Character migrates to Standard (Softcore). Hardcore players have a separate economy and ranking.
Solo Self-Found (SSF)Optional rule: no trading with other players. Find all loot yourself. Slower progression; pure self-sufficiency.
SSF HardcoreThe most hardcore mode. One death + no trading. The ultimate solo challenge.

Next league (expected early July 2026)GGG’s typical cycle suggests new league launch around early July 2026. Specific name and mechanic TBA.
Headphones for combat audioDistant enemy sounds and boss-fight audio cues. Stereo headphones reveal mechanics before visual completion.
Master volume around 50–60 percentPoE peaks loud during boss fights and high-density mapping. Lower master volume preserves headroom.
FPS lock or unlockPoE runs well at high FPS. Lock to monitor refresh rate (60/120/144) for consistent input; unlock for maximum responsiveness on high-end systems.
Texture quality and shadowsPoE’s engine isn’t graphically demanding. Most modern PCs run at max settings. Reduce post-processing for mob-dense engagements.
Custom keybind setupPoE supports custom keybinds. Map abilities to comfortable positions; default WASD or RGB-skill setup.
Sound mix sliderAudio menu lets you isolate Music, Combat, Voice. Reduce Music; amplify Combat for better situational awareness.
Verify after every leagueGGG ships major updates every 3-4 months. Five minutes of menu review per league prevents one bad league start.
11 · Pro Tips
Compound habits across the long PoE arc.
Follow a build guide for your first leaguePoE has thousands of build variations. Pick a top-tier league-start build (Maxroll, Build of the Week, Mathil) and follow it through campaign.
Don’t skip LabyrinthLabyrinth trials unlock Ascendancy points. Each is a major power spike; never skip them.
Stockpile crafting orbsDon’t spend crafting orbs early. Save Chaos and Exalted Orbs for the mid-to-late game when crafting becomes valuable.
Use the trade sitePoE’s trade site is the most-efficient way to acquire gear. Browse, buy, sell. Avoid manual whispers; use the standardized interface.
Watch endgame streamersMathil, Ziggy, Karvarousku stream endgame builds regularly. Two hours per week of high-rank content teaches mechanics fast.
Embrace deaths earlyNew characters die a lot. Each death teaches mechanics. Don’t restart at low levels; push through and learn.
Plan league-by-leaguePoE’s appeal is constant evolution. Each league reset is a fresh start; treat each league as a discrete project rather than continuous progression.
