Project Zomboid

The Indie Stone’s legendary zombie survival sandbox. Knox County, Kentucky. "This is how you died": the question is when.

Welcome to the Cosmo strategy hub for Project Zomboid. The Indie Stone has been developing Project Zomboid since 2011, making it one of the longest-running Early Access survival games in PC history. The current Stable branch is Build 41.78.19; the Unstable branch is Build 42.18 (May 2026), following Build 42.17.0 (April 20, 2026) and 42.16.x hotfixes. Build 42 went unstable in December 2024, added animals and basements, expanded crafting systems, and reached multiplayer support in late 2025. The Indie Stone has confirmed 2026 is the year Build 42 graduates to Stable; Build 43 will introduce the long-promised NPC system. Set in Knox County, Kentucky during a 1993 zombie outbreak, the game asks "How will you die?": a sandbox where survival is the question, not the answer. Everything below is vanilla, mechanics-only knowledge.

01 · The Survival Loop

Survive Knox County. Eventually you die.

  • Top-down isometric survival Project Zomboid is an isometric survival simulator. Character moves through Knox County managing hunger, thirst, fatigue, stress, panic, and many other survival metrics simultaneously.
  • Permadeath philosophy The tagline is "This is how you died." Death is permanent in standard play. Characters can be lost to zombies, infection, accidents, starvation, exposure: dozens of ways.
  • No story; pure sandbox No central narrative. The story is your character’s survival arc; the question is how long, not whether you’ll die. Some servers run permadeath; others allow respawn.
  • Knox County, Kentucky Map based on fictionalized Kentucky locations: Muldraugh, West Point, Riverside, Rosewood, Louisville (added Build 41), and more in Build 42. Multiple distinct towns and rural areas.
  • 1993 setting Set in July 1993. No modern technology; period-accurate cars, weapons, electronics. The fictional Knox Infection outbreak is the catalyst.
  • Sandbox + difficulty options Massive customization for difficulty: zombie population, sprint speed, daylight cycle, loot rarity, climate. Custom sandbox lets every player tune the difficulty.
  • Stable vs Unstable branch Stable branch (Build 41.78.19) is the reliable single-player and mod-heavy default. Unstable (Build 42.18) is the cutting-edge with new features but possible bugs.

02 · Character Creation & Traits

Build your survivor.

  • Occupation selection Pick from dozens of starting professions: Police Officer, Carpenter, Burglar, Park Ranger, Fire Officer, Veteran, Lumberjack, etc. Each provides starting skill bonuses and unique traits.
  • Trait point system Players have a trait budget. Positive traits cost points; negative traits refund points. Balance trait selection for the build you want.
  • Positive trait examples Athletic (faster sprint, recovery), Strong (more carry weight, melee damage), Lucky (better loot), Brave (less panic), Cat’s Eyes (better night vision).
  • Negative trait examples Overweight, Out of Shape, Slow Reader, Smoker, Weak, Cowardly, Underweight. Refunds trait points for stronger positive choices.
  • Hobby selection Optional starting hobby skills. Reading specific magazines accelerates skill progress; hobby selection sets early-game skill direction.
  • Background appearance Character appearance, clothing, accessories. Cosmetic only; affects narrative immersion not gameplay.
  • Build for the playstyle Aggressive players prioritize Strong + Athletic + combat occupations. Stealth players prioritize Cat’s Eyes + Light Eater + crafting occupations. Plan trait selection around playstyle.

04 · Combat & Zombies

Slow zombies; numerous; lethal.

  • Slow shambling zombies (default) Default zombies are slow shamblers. Individual zombies are manageable; groups (10+) are deadly. Knock-down, ground-stomp loop kills slow zombies efficiently.
  • Custom zombie speed options Sandbox lets you choose zombie speed: shambler (slow), shamblers + occasional fast, sprinter (Olympic-sprint speed). Sprinters are nightmare difficulty.
  • Sound attracts hordes Loud actions (gunfire, car engines, breaking windows) attract zombies from large distances. Stealth is the meta; gunfire is last resort.
  • Bite = death (eventually) Bites guarantee infection. Infection runs 0-7 days then character dies and reanimates. No cure in vanilla. Avoid bites at all costs.
  • Scratches and lacerations risk infection Scratches and lacerations have lower infection chance (default ~7%). Manage open wounds with bandages; clean and disinfect.
  • Melee combat patterns Push zombies to knock them down (stamina cost). Stomp ground-zombies for one-shot kills. Manage stamina; exhaustion = death.
  • Firearm combat (Build 42 refinement) Guns are loud but powerful. Build 42 added refined firearm aiming prioritizing headshots. High-skill firearm play clears groups but always attracts more zombies.

05 · Build 42 Features

The major content expansion.

  • Animals (livestock and wildlife) Build 42 added animals: chickens, cows, sheep, deer, rabbits, wild boars, wolves. Manage livestock for sustainable food; hunt wildlife with traps and firearms.
  • Basements Buildings now have basement levels. Hidden storage, base building underground, escape routes from horde-overrun structures.
  • Expanded crafting Pottery kilns, blacksmithing, expanded tailoring, masonry (stone construction). Crafting depth significantly deeper than Build 41.
  • New towns Build 42 adds new towns and rural areas to Knox County. Expanded map; new POIs; more variety in environments.
  • New occupation: Smith / Potter Build 42 added new starting occupations tied to new crafting systems. Specialty starts for crafting-focused players.
  • Improved AI for animals and zombies Smarter animal behavior; refined zombie AI. Animals flee predators, form herds. Zombies more cohesive in groups.
  • Performance optimizations Build 42 brings engine and rendering improvements. Higher zombie counts feasible; better multi-core CPU utilization.

06 · Base Building

Carpentry, defense, infrastructure.

  • Wood construction (Carpentry) Wood walls, doors, windows, floors, stairs. Foundation of all base building. Tiered durability based on Carpentry skill.
  • Metal construction (Metalworking) Metal walls and doors. Higher durability than wood; requires welding torch and propane.
  • Masonry (Build 42) Stone walls and structures. Even higher durability than metal; uses local stone resources.
  • Defensive structures Walls, gates, sheet metal reinforced windows. Plan base layout for zombie defense; choke points and escape routes.
  • Generator-powered electricity Generators (require Electrical skill) power appliances. Refrigerators for food preservation; lights for night activity; radios for safehouse atmosphere.
  • Water management Rain collectors, water dispensers, plumbing. Critical infrastructure; water supply is the long-term survival bottleneck after the water shutoff event.
  • Food production Farming plots for crops; livestock pens for animals (Build 42); fishing for aquatic food. Sustainable food production is the endgame.

07 · Environment & Time

Day/night cycle; seasons; water/power shutoff.

  • Day/night cycle Roughly 1 hour real-time = 1 day in-game (default). Night drops visibility significantly; zombies harder to spot; stealth easier but combat riskier.
  • Seasonal changes Summer through winter cycles. Winter brings cold (hypothermia risk), snow (visibility), reduced foraging. Plan winter survival in advance.
  • Water shutoff Knox County water supply shuts off after several in-game weeks. Stockpile water before; rain collection essential post-shutoff.
  • Power shutoff Electrical grid fails after several in-game weeks. Refrigerated food spoils; lights stop working; generators become essential.
  • Erosion (long-term) Over months of in-game time, abandoned buildings and structures degrade. Plant overgrowth, broken infrastructure, environmental decay.
  • Weather effects Rain, snow, storms. Storms reduce visibility; rain wets clothing causing cold exposure; lightning can ignite buildings.
  • Helicopter event (random) Random in-game event: a helicopter passes overhead, attracting all nearby zombies to your location for 1-2 in-game hours. Major mid-game stress event.

08 · Multiplayer

Co-op survival up to 16+ players.

  • Multiplayer added Build 41 stable Multiplayer support arrived in Build 41 stable. Co-op survival with friends; dedicated server architecture; persistent world.
  • Build 42 multiplayer (added Dec 2025) Build 42 multiplayer support arrived in late 2025. Initially unstable; gradually improving through Build 42.13-42.18 updates.
  • Server sizes (4-32+ players) Small co-op servers (4 friends) or large public servers (16-32+ players). Larger servers have more PvP risk and economy depth.
  • PvE vs PvP servers PvE servers prohibit player combat. PvP servers allow open combat; player death is the most-common death type on PvP servers.
  • Faction system (server-specific) Servers can enable factions. Group player communities; territorial claims; alliance dynamics.
  • Voice and text chat In-game text chat and proximity voice (depending on server config). External Discord coordination common.
  • Server mods Modded servers run extensive customizations. Custom maps, weapons, vehicles, gameplay rules. Server modding scene is massive.

09 · Modding Scene

Steam Workshop is the lifeblood.

  • Steam Workshop integration Project Zomboid has thousands of community mods. Workshop-integrated; one-click subscription; auto-update.
  • Vehicle mods Custom vehicles add hundreds of new cars and trucks. Period-authentic vehicles, sci-fi vehicles, mod-specific vehicles. Massive vehicle catalog beyond vanilla.
  • Weapon mods Real-world weapons, fantasy weapons, expanded firearm packs. Modded weapons span every conceivable category.
  • Map mods New towns, cities, regions. "Bedford Falls," "Lake Ivy," and dozens of community maps expand the world significantly.
  • Gameplay mods NPC mods (Britas, Superb Survivors), expanded crafting, new professions, alternative game systems. The modding scene fills the vanilla NPC gap.
  • Quality-of-life mods Inventory expansion, UI improvements, faster combat, expanded medical systems. Most veteran players run 20-50+ QoL mods.
  • Build 42 migration Build 41 mods don’t automatically work in Build 42. The 41-to-42 mod migration is the most painful transition since multiplayer launched. Plan migration carefully.

10 · 2026 Roadmap

Build 42 Stable, Build 43 NPCs.

  • Build 42 reaching Stable in 2026 The Indie Stone has confirmed 2026 is the year Build 42 leaves Unstable and becomes the canonical Stable build. Specific date not yet announced; ongoing polish.
  • Build 43: NPC system Build 43 will introduce the long-promised NPC system. Survivor and bandit NPCs populate Knox County. Major content addition reshaping the game.
  • NPC admin-tunable spawn rates NPCs will have admin-tunable spawn rates from day one. Server admins can tune NPC density per server community preferences.
  • NPC impact on multiplayer NPCs will reshape multiplayer dynamics. Roleplay communities will likely embrace them; PvP/coop survival communities may disable them.
  • New design director Christian "Serellan" Allen joined as design director in late 2025. Plans more community communication and faster cadence.
  • Build 42 hotfix series Build 42.16.1, 42.16.2, 42.16.3, 42.17.0 (April 20, 2026), and 42.18.0 (May 2026). Active polish toward Stable graduation.
  • Security updates for Build 41 Build 41.78.18 and 41.78.19 added security fixes. Stable players retain protected baseline during the transition.

11 · Pro Tips

Compound habits across the long Zomboid arc.

  • Choose Stable or Unstable carefully New players start on Stable (Build 41.78.19) for reliability. Adventurous players try Unstable (Build 42.18) for new content but expect bugs and save loss risks.
  • Back up your saves Save loss is brutal in long-term Project Zomboid runs. Back up your Zomboid folder regularly; especially before branch switches or mod updates.
  • Plan for water and power shutoffs Both shut off within weeks. Stockpile bottled water; install rain collectors; acquire generators and fuel early.
  • Skill books and magazines Find skill books to unlock skill XP multipliers. Find magazines for specific recipe unlocks. Both are foundational for skill progression.
  • Watch streamers and YouTubers Project Zomboid YouTube content is exceptional. AmbiguousAmphibian, Pr1vateLime, and others teach mechanics in depth. Two hours per week saves dozens of hours of trial-and-error.
  • Sandbox tune for your style Sandbox options let you tune difficulty extensively. New players reduce zombie population and increase loot; veterans crank up sprinters and rare loot.
  • Embrace permadeath philosophy Characters die. Survive longer next time. Treat each character’s death as a learning experience; the game is "How will you die?" not "Will you die?"
