Rust

Survive harder. Build smarter. Loot bigger.

Welcome to the Cosmo strategy hub for Rust. Everything below is vanilla, server-rules-friendly knowledge: early-game pacing, crafting reference, monument risk tiers, base building, workbench progression, the scrap economy, combat fundamentals, environmental hazards, and the safe console commands every wiped player should know.

01 · Early-Game Priorities

The first thirty minutes decide your wipe.

  • Punch trees and nodes Wood and stone are the gateway to every other tool. Do not waste rock swings on the same tree past 200 wood: move and gather breadth.
  • Craft a Stone Hatchet immediately Wood gathering accelerates roughly 4x once you ditch the starter rock. Same logic for the Stone Pickaxe and stone nodes.
  • Hemp plants are free cloth Five hemp plants in the grasslands give enough cloth to craft a Sleeping Bag. Look for the small yellow buds along open biomes.
  • Place a Sleeping Bag (100 cloth) Always before you wander further than 200m from spawn. A respawn point is the difference between a setback and a restart.
  • Hotbar a bandage Bleeding kills more new players than direct combat. Bandages are dirt cheap and stop bleed instantly.
  • Cook before you store Raw meat spoils within minutes. Cooked chicken or boar lasts long enough to be a real food supply.
  • Hit Tier-1 monuments first Lighthouse, Supermarket, Gas Station, Mining Outpost: no radiation, low risk, real loot, and a baseline scrap drip.
  • Build a Twig 1x1 by minute 30 Even a roofless box with a wooden door blocks sleeper raids. Upgrade to Wood walls as soon as you have 1000+ wood.
  • Avoid naked PvP A bow with no kit beats fists with no plan. Only fight when the numbers favor you, the cover favors you, or the loot is worth the gamble.

02 · Crafting Cost Reference

Vanilla rates. Modded servers will differ: confirm in your in-game crafting menu.

ItemCostNotes
Bandage1 Cloth · 1 RopeStops bleeding instantly. Always have one hotbarred.
Sleeping Bag100 ClothRespawn anchor. Place first, place second, place third.
Wooden Spear200 WoodPre-bow combat tool. Cheap, throwable, surprisingly viable.
Bow200 WoodWorkbench-free ranged option for early-game pressure.
Stone Hatchet75 Wood · 50 StoneMassive gather-rate upgrade over the starter rock.
Stone Pickaxe75 Wood · 50 StoneRequired for stone-tier and metal-ore mining speed.
Wood Storage Box100 WoodCheap, small, replaceable. Spread loot across many.
Tool Cupboard1000 WoodDefines building privilege. One per base, placed deep inside.
Furnace200 Wood · 50 StoneSmelts sulfur ore, metal ore, HQM. Core to the wipe economy.
Campfire50 WoodCooks meat, melts ice, lights interiors. First fire in any base.

03 · Monument Tier Guide

Risk vs reward. Match your hazmat coverage to your ambitions.

Tier 1 No radiation
  • Lighthouse
  • Supermarket
  • Gas Station
  • Mining Outpost
  • Fishing Village
  • Outpost (safe-zone)
  • Bandit Camp (safe-zone)
Bring
Whatever you have. Even naked, this tier is approachable.
Take
Components, basic clothing, low-grade fuel, scrap.

Outpost and Bandit Camp host recyclers: your scrap pipeline lives here.

Tier 2 Light radiation: hazmat helpful
  • Harbor
  • Sewer Branch
  • Satellite Dish
  • Junkyard
  • Train Yard
Bring
Anti-radiation pills or partial hazmat, a bow or crossbow, food and water.
Take
Mid-tier components, more scrap, occasional T2 weapon drops, electrical parts.

Mid-tier components and the first reliable scrap density outside safe-zones.

Tier 3 Heavy radiation: full hazmat required
  • Airfield
  • Power Plant
  • Water Treatment
  • Military Tunnels
  • Launch Site
  • Arctic Research Base
Bring
Full hazmat, syringes and a large medkit, a Tier 2+ weapon, food, a return plan.
Take
High Quality Metal, military components, rare blueprints, T3 weapon drops.

End-game loot tables. Bring meds, friends, and an exit plan.

04 · Base-Building Fundamentals

Single-layer walls die. Layered walls live.

  • Tool Cupboard (TC) Place it inside, deep. The TC defines building privilege: losing it means losing your base.
  • Honeycomb Add an extra wall ring between your exterior and your core. Doubles or triples the raid cost for the same internal volume.
  • Triangle bunkers A triangle floor inside a square gives you a two-wall-thick loot core. The classic raid-resistant shell.
  • Airlocks Two doors with a buffer space between them. Stops door-camping and naked rushes during the open-door window.
  • Loot room placement Multiple walls deep, multiple ceilings up. Never on the ground floor next to an external wall.
  • Door choice matters Sheet Metal beats Wood. Garage Doors stack well for raid cost. Armored Doors are the standard for serious bases.
  • Decoy storage Spread loot across boxes, ideally across bases. One TC raid should not equal a full wipe for you.
  • Compound foundations External walls and gates around your base buy time and force tower-and-rocket raids instead of door-knocks.

05 · Safe Console Commands

F1 opens the in-game console. Every command below is vanilla, supported, and server-rules-friendly.

CommandWhat it does
killSuicides your character. Faster than the menu: useful when you spawned wrong, are trapped, or want to respawn at a specific bag.
disconnectLeaves the current server cleanly. Better than alt-F4: saves your position and avoids the rejoin penalty on some servers.
combatlogPrints your last few combat events with damage taken and dealt. Built-in, fully vanilla, your evidence when something feels off.
fps.limit 144Caps your framerate. Set it to your monitor’s refresh rate to reduce input latency and GPU load.
gc.collectForces a Unity garbage-collection pass. Small perf nudge after long sessions when memory creeps up.
perf 1Shows a small stats overlay (FPS, ping, memory). Useful while diagnosing stutters or troubleshooting performance.
client.connect IP:PORTDirect-connects to a server by IP and port. Faster than browsing the in-game server list.
bind <key> <command>Creates a custom keybind. Common: bind mouse2 +duck, bind q forward;sprint (auto-run).
find [string]Searches the console for any command containing your string. Use this to discover other vanilla settings.

06 · Pro Tips

Quick hits the loading screens never tell you.

  • Press G for the in-game map Shows monuments, your position, and notes you can pin for the team.
  • Recycle components, do not stockpile them Scrap is the universal currency: components are the rawest form of it.
  • Workbenches gate blueprints T1 → T2 → T3 progression unlocks the meta items. Plan your farming around your current tier.
  • Helicopter and Bradley APC are team events High reward, high coordination. Solo attempts mostly feed the loot pile.
  • Wipe day is farm day Days 2–4 are when most players are vulnerable. Pace your aggression to the wipe cycle.
  • Use the in-game voice chat Trades happen at safe-zones. Negotiation costs nothing and turns hostile encounters into deals.
  • Wipe schedule Most servers wipe weekly on Thursdays at 2pm Pacific. Forced full wipes hit the first Thursday of each month.

07 · Workbench Tiers & Tech Progression

Each bench unlocks a tier of blueprints and crafting. Without the bench, even researched items cannot be made.

Workbench T1 Early-game tech
  • Revolver
  • Double Barrel Shotgun
  • Crossbow
  • Bandage
  • Hoodie
  • Pants
  • Mining Helmet
  • Bone Armor
Bring
Wood, metal fragments, and your first 75 scrap.
Take
Your first real weapons and basic clothing.

Place the T1 bench inside your starter base. Many servers require you to research at the bench location.

Workbench T2 Mid-game tech
  • Custom SMG
  • Thompson
  • Pump Shotgun
  • Semi-Auto Rifle
  • Semi-Auto Pistol
  • Road Sign Armor
  • Coffee Can Helmet
Bring
Significant scrap (typically 500+ accumulated through Tier 1 and 2 monument runs) and metal frags.
Take
Competitive PvP loadouts and proper armor sets.

T2 is the inflection point: once it is placed, you can hold mid-tier ground against most other groups.

Workbench T3 End-game tech
  • AK (Assault Rifle)
  • LR-300
  • M249
  • Bolt Action Rifle
  • Compound Bow
  • Metal Facemask
  • Metal Chest Plate
  • Heavy Plate Armor
Bring
High Quality Metal and a heavy scrap reserve. HQM comes from the quarry, mining, or Launch Site.
Take
Top-tier weaponry and full raid kits.

T3 is what wins late-wipe fights. Protect this bench like it is your TC: a stolen T3 hurts more than a stolen base.

08 · Components & Scrap Economy

Scrap funds your blueprints. Components fund your scrap. Master the loop and the wipe is yours.

  • Where components come from Barrels, crates, and military crates at every monument. Spawn rate and quality scale with monument tier.
  • Tech Trash The highest-value recyclable in the game. Found mainly at Tier 2 and Tier 3 monuments. Recycle for several scrap each.
  • Targeting Computer + CCTV Camera Required components for the Auto-Turret. Worth pulling out of the recycle queue if you plan to defend a base.
  • Sewing Kit, Rope, Tarp Direct crafting uses for armor, clothing, and electronics. Do not recycle these reflexively.
  • Rifle Body / SMG Body / Semi Body Gates the corresponding weapons even after you research the BP. Hoard them through monument runs.
  • Recyclers for free Outpost and Bandit Camp recyclers run inside safe-zones. The Junkyard, Sewer Branch, and Train Yard recyclers cost a contested run.
  • Scrap is the universal currency Blueprints cost scrap, T2 and T3 benches cost scrap, vending machines accept scrap. Treat it like cash.

09 · Combat & Healing Basics

Fighting in Rust is positioning, sound, and self-care more than aim.

  • Headshots roughly double damage Most rifles take a body to two-shot. A clean headshot ends a fight. Aim high, especially at range.
  • Bandage Stops bleeding instantly and gives a small heal. Pennies to craft, always hotbarred.
  • Medical Syringe Roughly 35hp over a few seconds plus bleed stop. Mid-fight healing without the full medkit commitment.
  • Large Medkit Major instant heal. Use after a fight, not in the middle of one: the animation locks you in place.
  • Do not peek the same angle twice Your second peek is exactly what they are aiming at. Move two windows over before checking again.
  • Sound discipline Footsteps, doors, chests, reloads, and craft sounds are all audible. Crouching reduces footstep volume but does not silence it.
  • Hotbar your meds before the fight Switching to a heal mid-fight while fumbling through inventory is a common cause of death. Keep them on number keys.
  • Gun beats bow in the open Bow beats gun behind cover. Pick fights that match what you have.

10 · Wildlife & Environmental Hazards

The map kills more new players than other players do.

Low Risk Manage with basic gear
  • Chickens (passive food)
  • Boars (passive, more meat)
  • Deer / Stags (cloth)
  • Horses (mountable)
  • Rivers (drink raw, refills hydration)
Bring
A spear or bow. Anything above your fists.
Take
Meat, cloth, leather, and the occasional horse.

These are your steady supply line. Hunt early, often, and cook before storing.

Medium Risk Pack support and warm clothes
  • Wolves (pack hunters at night)
  • Sharks (when diving)
  • Cold biomes (snow, tundra)
  • Heat biomes (desert)
Bring
Warm clothes for snow, water for desert, a melee weapon and a ranged option.
Take
Wolf meat, cloth, occasionally horse-tier loot.

Most of these kill via attrition rather than burst damage. Manage hydration, comfort, and stamina before you engage.

High Risk PvE bosses: bring a kit
  • Bears (high HP, high damage)
  • Radiation zones (stacks per second)
  • Patrol Helicopter
  • Bradley APC
  • Cargo Ship raiders
Bring
Full hazmat, syringes, a Tier 2+ weapon, rockets for the Heli/Bradley, and at least one teammate.
Take
High-tier military crates, locked crates, and the bragging rights.

Helicopter and Bradley reward serious coordination. Going solo is mostly a contribution to the next group’s loot pile.
