Welcome to the Cosmo strategy hub for SCUM. Croatian studio Gamepires (now under Splash Damage after acquisition from Jagex) launched SCUM into Steam Early Access on August 29, 2018; the full 1.0 release arrived June 17, 2025 after nearly seven years of development. The game positions itself as a "prison riot survival" simulator on a 225 km² island inspired by Croatian territory, where prisoners fight for freedom in front of an audience hungry for spectacle. The current "Into the Wild" season (started May 25, 2026; multi-month) overhauls hunting with Animal Trail Generation, adds meat quality based on shot placement, Bait Feeders, and auto-sort inventory — critically with no server wipe. Up to 80 players per server; deep character simulation; the hardest survival simulator on the market. Everything below is vanilla, mechanics-only knowledge.

01 · The Survival Loop

You are a TEC1 prisoner. Survive; escape; entertain.

  • Prisoner narrative Each player is a TEC1 corporation prisoner placed on a televised reality-show island. The entertainment-corporation premise frames the survival loop.
  • Up to 80 players per server Servers support 80 simultaneous players. Most servers run dedicated rule sets; community servers customize PvP, PvE balance, raid rules.
  • Fame point system Earn Fame points by completing missions, participating in events, or simply surviving. Spend Fame at the four safe-zone trading vendors for higher-tier items.
  • Implant (the escape blocker) Prisoners have implants that prevent leaving the island. Story-driven; some missions reference implant removal as the long-term escape narrative.
  • Character attribute simulation Strength, Constitution, Dexterity, Intelligence. Each affects survival mechanics deeply. Character creation matters; characters are not interchangeable.
  • Skill progression Skills improve through use: rifles, melee, cooking, medical, athletics. Specialized characters survive better than generalists.
  • Permadeath mode (optional) Some server rules use permadeath. Standard servers respawn with full skill loss; permadeath ends the character.

03 · Character & Skills

Deep simulation; skills improve through use.

  • Attribute system Strength, Constitution, Dexterity, Intelligence are the four primary attributes. Character creation distributes points; affects all gameplay systems.
  • Skill use progression Skills improve through use, not XP. Run more = athletics improves. Shoot rifles = rifle skill improves. Skills decline over time without use.
  • Major skill categories Combat (Melee, Rifles, Handgun, Archery), Survival (Awareness, Cooking, Medical, Endurance), Crafting (Engineering, Camouflage), Athletics, Driving.
  • Metabolism simulation Hunger, thirst, sleep, body temperature all tracked. Nutritional balance (protein, fat, carbs, vitamins) affects health. Eat varied diet; manage all metrics.
  • Disease and injury Realistic medical simulation. Wounds, infections, broken bones, illnesses. Treatment requires specific medical items; mishandled injuries kill.
  • Body customization Extensive character creation. Body sliders for both male and female prisoners; tattoos, hair, body type. Mature content (M-rated).
  • Skill caps and specialization Specialize characters in 2-3 skill categories rather than try to master all. Skill progression rewards focus.

04 · Into the Wild (Current Season)

May 25, 2026 update; hunting overhaul.

  • Animal Trail Generation New hunting system. Replaces old tracking minigame. Players read environmental signs (footprints, broken branches, droppings) to stalk prey.
  • Meat quality based on shot placement New meat quality mechanic. Clean shots produce higher-quality meat than messy kills. Hunting strategy matters beyond just success.
  • Bait Feeders Place Bait Feeders to lure wildlife and fish to your territory. Sustainable hunting; reduces need for active stalking.
  • Inventory Auto-sort Long-requested QoL feature. Organize inventory by type, amount, or durability with one click. Significantly reduces base management friction.
  • Farming rebalances Farming and food loot distribution rebalanced. Self-sufficient farms more viable; scavenging still relevant but no longer the only path.
  • No server wipe No server wipe with the May 25 update. Existing progress, fortified bases, and characters preserved. Significant decision; uncommon for major content updates.
  • Multi-month content series "Into the Wild" is a multi-month content series. Multiple updates within the season; deepens survival loop progressively.

06 · Hunting & Farming

Self-sufficiency for the long game.

  • Hunting (with Into the Wild overhaul) Read environmental tracks; stalk prey; clean kills. Meat quality matters; experienced hunters yield more nutrition per kill.
  • Wildlife species Deer, boars, wolves, rabbits, chickens, fish. Each has different difficulty, meat yield, and hide value.
  • Farming crops Plant crops (vegetables, fruits, grains). Time-based growth; weather affects yield. Sustainable food source.
  • Livestock (limited) Some animals can be domesticated. Maintain food supply through livestock rather than constant hunting.
  • Cooking system Raw ingredients combine into prepared meals. Cooking skill affects meal quality; better meals provide better nutritional value.
  • Bait Feeders (Into the Wild) Place Bait Feeders to attract wildlife. Passive hunting; reduces active stalking time; sustainable.
  • Fishing Cast lines into water bodies. Patient activity; reliable food source; less skill-intensive than hunting.

07 · Base Building

Persistent fortifications.

  • Construction tiers Basic (wood) → Reinforced (stone/concrete) → Fortified (metal). Each tier increases damage resistance and crafting cost.
  • Persistent bases Bases persist between sessions. Build once; maintain over time. Server wipes occasionally reset but recent Into the Wild preserved progress.
  • Defensive structures Walls, gates, traps, lookout towers. Protect bases from raids in PvP servers.
  • Functional infrastructure Storage, beds, workbenches, water collection, gardens. Build for self-sufficiency; minimize reliance on external supply.
  • Vehicle garages Park vehicles inside bases for protection. Vehicles outside bases are vulnerable to theft.
  • Base raid rules (server-dependent) Some servers allow PvP raids on bases; others protect bases from raids. Check server rules before investing significantly.
  • Construction skills Engineering skill affects base construction. Higher Engineering = better base efficiency; rewards focused character build.

08 · Modes & Server Types

Server rules define experience.

  • PvE servers No PvP combat between players. Cooperative play; focus on survival mechanics; safer base building.
  • PvP servers Open PvP combat. Players engage each other freely; bases vulnerable to raids; high-stakes mode.
  • Mixed PvE/PvP PvP zones within PvE servers. Safe zones for new players; designated combat zones for veterans. Common balanced server type.
  • Hardcore servers Stricter rules: permadeath, less HUD, reduced fast travel. The most extreme survival experience.
  • RP (roleplay) servers Roleplay-focused servers. Persistent characters, narrative-driven gameplay, community-driven events.
  • Single-player mode Solo play against AI. No multiplayer; no server requirements. Practice mode for learning mechanics.
  • Co-op private servers Self-hosted servers for friends. Customize rules entirely; small dedicated communities.

09 · Long-term Progression

Skill, gear, and base development.

  • Skill progression curve Skills improve through use. Master 2-3 skills deeply; generalists progress slower than specialists.
  • Fame points stockpiling Spend Fame at safe-zone vendors. Higher-tier items require significant Fame; prioritize Fame-earning missions.
  • Vehicle progression Cars and motorcycles unlock through gameplay. Vehicles enable long-distance travel; protect them carefully.

10 · Audio & Settings

Realistic survival sim; tune for immersion and clarity.

  • Master volume around 50–60 percent SCUM peaks loud during combat. Lower master volume preserves headroom for ambient audio.

  • Track meat quality in Into the Wild Clean shots produce better meat. Don’t spray-and-pray; deliberate shots are more efficient overall.
  • Plant gardens early Farming becomes a long-term sustainable food source. Plant early; the time investment pays off.
  • Manage all metrics Hunger, thirst, sleep, temperature, nutrition. Neglecting one weakens the character; manage all consistently.
