The Isle

Afterthought’s dinosaur survival sandbox. You are the animal: hatch, feed, grow for hours of real time, and die exactly once.

Welcome to the Cosmo strategy hub for The Isle. Afterthought LLC put this game into Steam Early Access in December 2015 and has spent most of the decade since rebuilding it from the ground up. Two branches still launch: Legacy, the original build, frozen and left in place, and Evrima, the rewrite that receives every patch. This guide covers Evrima only, because that is where the servers and the mechanics are. The public branch sits at 0.21.772 from August 2026, which added the Austroraptor with its pounce, water jump and daytime spearfishing stance; Kentrosaurus landed a month earlier in 0.21.720; and Gateway has now replaced Isla Spiro as the only map on the branch. DevBlog #72 on 1 September 2026 put a reworked migration system, Entombed Saves and the Oviraptor into QA ahead of a hordetest release. There is no taming and no human avatar. You hatch, you eat, you grow for hours, and when something with a bite force of 699 catches you at sub-adult, that character is gone permanently. Everything below is vanilla mechanics: the three nutrient bars, what each species costs in hours, the six damage types, status effects and their cures, mutations, migration and patrol zones, courting and nests, the Elder lifecycle, and the awareness habits that actually keep characters breathing.

A line drops from it and branches to five boxes stacked down the page: "Raw", "Bleed", "Fracture", "Bacteria" and "Venom".05Six Ways to Take DamageRawBleedFractureBacteriaVenom
Figure 1. Section 05 of this page is "Six Ways to Take Damage". These are the first five of the seven entries it lists.

01 · Your First Ninety Minutes

Hypsilophodon reaches adult in 1h 50m. Spend that time learning the systems, not hiding in a bush.

  • Pick Hypsilophodon first At 1h 50m to adult and 20 kg fully grown, it is the cheapest character in the game to lose, and it carries the best panic button on the roster: a blinding bile spit that buys the two seconds an escape needs. Learn the game on something you can replace before dinner.
  • Open the diet panel before you move Press Tab. The panel names the exact plants or prey your species wants. Eating off-diet is not punished and is fine as a snack, but it feeds no nutrient bar, so it contributes nothing to growth. Most new players spend an hour eating things that do nothing.
  • Find water in the first five minutes Thirst drains faster than hunger, and dehydration multiplies every other problem you have. Gateway carries lakes, rivers and wallowing holes. Fix your position relative to one of them before you start foraging, not after your thirst bar turns.
  • Head for a sanctuary Tree icons on your compass fill in as you approach one. Bee swarms drive off anything judged too large or too old, and the dense awkward trees make the terrain itself hostile to big bodies. Juveniles forage there in relative safety.
  • Hold Q to scent Scent range expands the longer you hold the key. Tap Q instead and you get the compass. Reading the ground is how you locate food, water, and whatever has already started following you.
  • Do not call on 1 in the open Broadcast sits on 1 and carries a long way. Friendly call is 2, threaten is 3, help is 4, and F is general vocalisation. Every one of them paints your position. Calls are for finding your own species, not for filling silence.
  • Lie down to heal H lays you down, which restores health and stamina faster and clears bleed quicker the longer you hold still; keep holding it to sleep. Ninety seconds flat in cover beats limping across open plains toward a landmark you may not reach.

02 · The Three Nutrient Bars

Alpha, beta and gamma. Stacking them is the entire growth system, and almost everyone under-uses it.

  • Alpha carbs, beta proteins, gamma lipids Three bars, three jobs. Alpha grants bleed regeneration, beta grants health regeneration, gamma grants fracture regeneration, each capped at ten percent. The buffs are useful; the growth multiplier attached to them is the real prize.
  • One bar is one hundred percent growth Holding a single nutrient caps your growth rate at one hundred percent. That is the slow default, and it is where most players spend their entire session without ever noticing there is a faster setting.
  • Two bars double it Any two nutrients held together give two hundred percent growth plus a combo resistance: beta with alpha gives bleed resistance, beta with gamma gives fracture resistance, alpha with gamma locks health regeneration. Ten percent cap on each.
  • Three bars triple it All three at once gives three hundred percent growth, stamina regeneration up to fifteen percent, and every individual bonus capped higher. This is the difference between a four hour character and a twelve hour one. It is not a luxury.
  • Variety, not volume A full stomach of one food is strictly worse than three mouthfuls of three different foods. Check which bar is lowest, then go eat for that bar specifically. Eating whatever is nearest is the single most common growth mistake.
  • Salt rock resets a bar At a salt lick you can open Tab and deliberately deplete a chosen nutrient. That sounds backwards until a pinned-full bar is blocking you from topping up the one you actually need before a migration moves on.
  • Perfect diet pays later Holding at least one percent of each nutrient counts as perfect diet and ticks one of the ten Elder requirements. Holding two nutrient slots for sixty percent or more of your growth quietly unlocks the hidden Enhanced Digestion mutation.

03 · Gateway, the Only Island

Isla Spiro is retired. One map, learned properly, is a permanent advantage over people who wander.

  • Gateway replaced Spiro Gateway is the second map Evrima shipped and is now the only one on the branch. It is larger than Spiro, carries more human infrastructure, and was designed around the migration system rather than having it bolted on afterwards.
  • Biomes are a food index Jungles hold papaya, jack fruit, brazil nuts, trillium and fiddlehead. Grasslands hold oranges, pumpkins, sunchoke roots, agave and cashew. Highlands hold radish and mountain ash. Swamps hold sumac and chanterelle. Coast and mud flats hold mangos, fireweed and dulse seaweed.
  • Watering holes are ambush ground Everything on the island has to drink, which makes water the most reliable place to find another player and the most reliable place to be found. Approach through cover, scent before committing, and drink facing your exit rather than the water.
  • Wallowing holes clot and mask Mud clots open wounds and hides your blood trail. If you are bleeding and being tracked, a wallow ends the chase in a way that running almost never does, because the tracker loses the trail rather than the distance.
  • Vein Island is a pantry The island off the swamp coast carries grass, huntable AI and a wallowing hole in one compact area. For a mixed diet it is unusually efficient, which also means other players know about it.
  • Carnivores starve crossing it Gateway is big enough that travelling it without a meal in the middle is a genuine risk. Plan routes that thread through AI spawns rather than drawing a straight line to where you want to end up.
  • Nesting grounds are marked Designated nesting grounds accelerate hatchling growth, which is exactly why they concentrate small, slow, distracted animals. They are the softest and most contested ground on the map at the same time.

04 · What Each Species Costs in Hours

Growth time is the real currency here, not health. Health is just weight: one kilogram equals one point.

Under Five Hours Learn here, lose here cheaply
  • Hypsilophodon (1h 50m, 20 kg, blind spit)
  • Troodon (3h 10m, 60 kg, venom bite)
  • Dryosaurus (4h 25m, 130 kg, dodge)
  • Pteranodon (4h 30m, 90 kg, flight)
Bring
Willingness to die repeatedly while you learn scent, calls and the diet panel.
Take
A complete lifecycle in a single sitting, and enough repetitions that you actually improve.

All four reach adult inside one evening. Three of them also satisfy the Elder species requirement outright, so they are not a compromise, they are a shortcut.

Five to Eight Hours The working middle of the roster
  • Herrerasaurus (5h 25m, 175 kg, climbs)
  • Tenontosaurus (5h 40m, 1,600 kg, tail slam)
  • Omniraptor (5h 55m, 395 kg, pack bleed)
  • Ceratosaurus (6h, 1,450 kg, bacterial bite)
  • Dilophosaurus (6h, 700 kg, hallucinations)
  • Pachycephalosaurus (6h 15m, 500 kg, fractures)
  • Maiasaura (7h, 3.7 t, bipedal and quadrupedal)
  • Carnotaurus (7h 40m, 1,300 kg, charge)
  • Diabloceratops (7h 45m, 3 t, spar)
Bring
A route plan and ideally a group, because this is the band where other players start hunting you deliberately.
Take
Real leverage: most of these can either kill or escape anything that is not an apex.

This band holds the most players and the best fights on any given server. If you only ever play one tier, make it this one.

Ten to Twelve Hours A full evening for one character
  • Allosaurus (10h, 2.6 t, pounce)
  • Kentrosaurus (11h 5m, 1,950 kg, defensive stance)
Bring
Patience, and a safe growth loop you can repeat without having to think about it.
Take
Allosaurus pounces things its own size. Kentrosaurus makes attacking it an error rather than a risk.

Kentrosaurus arrived in 0.21.720 in July 2026. Its stance toggle raises reflected damage and stability, and outright blocks certain abilities that connect with the spikes.

Eighteen Hours and Beyond Multi-session commitments
  • Stegosaurus (17h 55m, 6 t, tail swing)
  • Deinosuchus (23h 3m, 8 t, lunge, 500 bite)
  • Triceratops (29h 10m, 9.5 t, 600 bite)
  • Tyrannosaurus (35h 33m, 9.3 t, 699 bite)
Bring
A server you trust, a group willing to nest you, and acceptance that one careless trade ends the whole thing.
Take
The top of the food chain, and a character other players plan their evening around avoiding.

Thirty five and a half hours is not a typo. A Tyrannosaurus is days of real time. Play it as something genuinely irreplaceable, because for the next week it is.

05 · Six Ways to Take Damage

Raw damage is the least of your problems. Bleed is what actually ends characters.

  • Raw Straight health removal from a connecting bite. It is the only damage type that does exactly what the number says and then stops. Every other type keeps working after the animal that applied it has walked away.
  • Bleed A second, hidden health bar that ticks while you move and leaves a visible trail behind you. It is the biggest killer in the game, and you can die from it at full health. Severity scales upward as your resources drain.
  • Fracture Builds across three regions: head, body and legs. It does not tick damage, it disables. A broken leg removes your jump, your leg attacks and most of your speed, and it locks away health until it heals.
  • Bacteria Delivered by Ceratosaurus bites, far likelier when that Ceratosaurus has been eating rotten meat, and likelier again when your own hunger is low. It builds toward sickness rather than dropping you in the fight.
  • Venom Troodon’s tool. Damage over time paired with impaired senses, and the impairment is the part that kills you, because you stop reading the fight correctly while it is running.
  • Blindness Hypsilophodon’s bile spit and Dilophosaurus hallucinations both attack your vision instead of your health. Two seconds of not seeing is two seconds of uncontested distance for whoever applied it.
  • Stamina is the seventh Not a damage type, but it decides more fights than any of them. An empty stamina bar collapses your turn radius and converts you into a stationary target. Watch it more closely than your health.

06 · Status Effects & What Clears Them

Several of these have no cure at all. Knowing which ones changes how carefully you eat.

StatusHow you get itWhat it costs youWhat clears it
BleedAny bleed-tagged attack landingTicking damage whenever you move, plus a trail that predators followLie down and stay still, or wallow in mud to clot the wound and mask the trail
Leg fractureAccumulated fracture damage; Pachycephalosaurus specialises in itNo jump, no leg attacks, heavily reduced speed, some health locked offTime, accelerated by the Osteophagic mutation and eating bones
Bacterial sicknessA Ceratosaurus bite, likelier while your hunger is lowBacterial buildup and progressive stat lossLick a salt rock; it also drains on its own since 0.20.109
OvereatingEating past the flashing stomach iconAround five minutes of reduced diet and stats, with vomiting possibleSalt rock: press E and let the animal lick it off
Food poisoningSeveral mouthfuls of rotten meatSix to seven minutes of stat loss, and health loss if you keep eatingStop eating and wait for the timer
Vomit sicknessRotten food, or bones that are not in your dietRapid dehydration and up to eighty percent stat reduction for roughly five minutesNothing. Wait it out
DehydrationRotten food and bones, or simply not drinkingThirst falls every second, and moving raises your chance to vomitDrink, then stay still until it settles
Cannibalism sicknessEating your own species when it is not in your dietFifteen to twenty minutes of infertility, insanity and muscle spasmsNo known cure. It does not pass to hatchlings
Mushroom sicknessToo many yellow mushrooms without mushrooms in your dietFifteen to twenty minutes of hallucinations, paralysis and spasmsNo known cure. It does not pass to hatchlings

07 · Mutations & the Three Choices

Three picks per life, plus whatever your parents managed to pass down.

  • Three slots, three stages You choose one mutation on reaching juvenile, one at sub-adult and one at adult. The large hexagons are your own picks; the smaller ones hold traits inherited from parents, and several are reserved for systems not yet shipped.
  • Cellular Regeneration Fifteen to twenty five percent faster health recovery. The reliable pick when you do not yet know what the server population looks like or whether you will be fighting at all this session.
  • Efficient Digestion Food drains twenty to thirty percent more slowly. On anything in the eighteen-hour band that is literally hours of foraging you no longer have to do, which is hours you are not exposed in the open.
  • Hydroregenerative Twenty five to seventy five percent faster recovery while it is raining. A weather-dependent gamble, and an excellent one on servers where rain is frequent. Worthless on a dry night. Note the spelling: the game ships it as one word, and its sibling Hydrodynamic is a swim-speed trait, not a healing one.
  • Social Behavior Herbivore only. Multiplies a leader’s group size by between 1.5 and 3. This is the highest-impact herbivore mutation in the game, because for a herbivore group size is the defence.
  • Hemomania Carnivore only. Five to ten percent extra damage against targets that are already bleeding, which compounds with every bleed-tagged bite you land and turns a long fight into a shorter one.
  • Hidden ones are earned, and retuned Unlock conditions get rebalanced patch to patch, so check before you chase one. The December 2025 pass alone rewrote two: Reniculate Kidneys now wants 1,000 units of water drunk, down from 2,500, and Multichambered Lungs wants 200,000 units of distance travelled, roughly two kilometres, rather than a stamina grind. Osteophagic is the cheapest of the set: eat any amount of bone while carrying a fracture of any type. Reinforced Tendons comes from jumping repeatedly.

08 · Courting, Nests & Raising a Clutch

Nesting is the only mechanism by which the hours you already spent get inherited by anything.

  • Gestate before you commit Females gestate eggs internally. Open Tab, click the Nest button, and choose how many to carry. Each egg consumes hunger and a slice of every nutrient while it develops, so gestate only what you can afford to keep feeding.
  • Hold N, face each other Both animals must be party-less and facing each other directly. The male holds N to open the ceremony and the female holds N to accept. Expect several attempts. Deinosuchus additionally has to be on the water surface.
  • A shared party means it worked Success drops both players into one party automatically. If the interface shows you as paired but you are not actually in a party together, the courting did not take and you need to run it again.
  • Build the nest first Laying requires three things simultaneously: a mated male, eggs at one hundred percent gestation, and a nest already constructed. Anything short of full gestation simply cannot be placed, so do not start the nest late.
  • Feed with E, not luck Hatchlings tap E to beg. The parent holds E over them until a distinct munching sound plays. No sound means no food actually transferred, no matter how convincing the animation looked. Listen for it every time.
  • Nesting grounds pay double Hatchling growth accelerates both when the parents are holding a good diet and when the nest sits inside a designated nesting ground. The two effects stack, so a well-fed pair in the right location raises young dramatically faster.
  • Twenty percent ends begging At roughly twenty percent growth a baby can no longer beg and has to feed itself. Walk them onto real food before that threshold, not after it, or you hand them a starvation problem at their most fragile.

09 · Migration, Patrol & Sanctuary Zones

The map is constantly telling you where to be. Most players never look.

  • Migration zones move Each herbivore species gets its own zone where its preferred food spawns at an increased rate. Eat the zone down and it relocates elsewhere, and the leftovers despawn roughly thirty minutes after the new zone is marked.
  • Find them by scent Hold Q. Your species’ zone is found by smell rather than by memorising coordinates, which is just as well, since it relocates often enough that memorising would be wasted effort.
  • Travel as a herd A migration is the safest mass movement available, because a predator has to cut a target out of a moving group instead of stalking one distracted animal standing alone in a field.
  • Patrol zones are for one Smaller pockets granted to an individual or to a group leader. Members share their leader’s zone rather than each receiving one, which quietly makes leading a group worth more than joining one.
  • Carnivore patrols follow activity A carnivore patrol zone activates where players matching its diet have recently been. Treat it as a staging point for a hunt rather than a promise that something edible is standing there waiting.
  • Sanctuaries are enforced Bee swarms attack anything the zone judges too large or too old. The trees are deliberately dense and awkward, so the terrain does most of the enforcement before the bees ever have to.
  • Sanctuary mushrooms are the shortcut Red mushrooms inside a sanctuary feed all three nutrient bars at once. That is the fastest triple stack a juvenile will find anywhere on the island, and it is sitting inside the safest terrain on the map.

10 · Elder: Prime or Frail

Adult is not the finish line. What you did before seventy five percent decides which adult you get.

  • Growth is banded Hatchling runs from zero to twenty five percent, juvenile from twenty five to fifty, and adult begins at seventy five. The Elder determination happens as you cross into adult, and it is not revisited afterwards.
  • Five of the eight, before 75 percent The current 0.21 list runs to eight objectives and you need any five of them finished before you cross seventy five percent growth. There is no in-game checklist telling you where you stand, and the deadline is enforced hard: patch 0.21.772 shipped a fix specifically for players who were acquiring Prime after seventy five percent. Miss the window and nothing later recovers it.
  • The four you can do alone Stand inside a sanctuary for about ten seconds, hold a perfect diet at least once, fully enter two migration zones, and fully enter four patrol zones. Fully means crossing the boundary, not clipping the edge: run three zones and five patrols instead of the minimums, because a marginal entry that fails to register costs you the whole run.
  • The four that need restraint or a partner Never let every nutrient bar empty, which is what makes you temporarily infertile. Never eat your own species, which is what causes muscle spasms. Be born from an egg another player nested. Nest and raise a hatchling to fifty percent growth, the intermediate stage 0.21 added. The last two are coordination problems, not skill problems.
  • Prime peaks at 87.5 percent From seventy five to eighty seven and a half percent a Prime Elder gains weight, speed, attack power, stomach capacity, blood pool, a visibly larger model and an extra mutation slot. Past that peak the stats taper off.
  • Frail only declines Fail the requirements and you decline from eighty seven and a half percent onward with no peak beforehand, finishing measurably weaker than an ordinary adult for the rest of that life. There is no way back.
  • Nutrients stop helping As of the current build, Elder stages no longer draw benefits from nutrients. Front-load all of your diet work before adult rather than assuming you can keep optimising once you get there.

11 · Scent, Calls & the Compass

Information wins far more encounters here than raw damage output does.

  • Hold Q, and keep holding Scent range expands the longer the key is held. A tap gives the compass instead. Most players release far too early and end up reading a small fraction of the ground that was available to them.
  • Four calls, four meanings 1 broadcasts, 2 is a friendly call, 3 threatens, 4 calls for help, and F produces general vocalisation. Each one is a deliberate broadcast of your exact position, so decide what you want in return before you press it.
  • Trot with Z Trot turns considerably tighter than a sprint does. In close combat turn radius beats top speed almost every time, and Z is how you get it without dumping your whole stamina bar.
  • Attacks sit on four inputs Left and right click are your primaries; alt with left or right click are the secondaries. Knowing your species’ two secondaries is most of its kit, and plenty of players never press them at all.
  • G does two different things Tap G to tear a chunk from a corpse; hold G to grab, carry or drag. Confusing the two next to a carcass wastes seconds while you are standing still over a fresh kill, which is the worst possible moment.
  • Scavenger AI is a signal Pterodactylus and Compsognathus are the scavengers: they spawn on corpses and eat them. Seeing them gather means fresh meat, and it also means whatever was capable of making that kill was standing there very recently. Psittacosaurus is the odd one out, it picks small corpses up and carries them off instead, so a body that moves without a predator attached is that little herbivore relocating your evidence.
  • Headphones over settings tweaks The direction of a distant call is worth more than any video option on the list. Cut foliage and shadow density if your framerate needs it in the dense biomes, but never trade away audio clarity to get it.

12 · AI Wildlife, Fish & Burrows

The island is stocked with animals that are not players. Most carnivores die of starvation next to food they never learned to catch.

  • Know the six AI classes by name Boar, deer, goat, rabbit, sea turtle and the schooling fish are the huntable stock; Compsognathus and Pterodactylus are the scavengers. Server owners can switch any class off individually, and they can change spawn interval and density too, so a server where you starved is not proof the route was bad. Check the server description before blaming the map.
  • Boar and turtle have pounce slots Pouncers can latch onto boar and sea turtle rather than trading bites with them, and a boar will otherwise put real damage into a juvenile that engages it head on. For a small carnivore, a latched boar is the difference between a meal and a limp.
  • Dig the burrows Every carnivore can dig at a Psittacosaurus burrow. While the animal is inside, or mid-burrow, it cannot be hit at all, so ramming the hole accomplishes nothing. Dig it out properly and it is a clean meal with no fight attached, which is exactly what a growing carnivore wants.
  • Compsognathus can be foraged The little scavengers are not only found standing on corpses; they can be dug up out of the ground. That makes them a food source you can create on demand rather than one you have to stumble into, which matters on a long crossing where the next carcass is theoretical.
  • Elite fish bite back Alongside the harmless schooling fish there is an elite variant that can grab a player outright and swallow them. Semi-aquatics treat the water as safe ground and it mostly is, but the water is the one place on Gateway where the ambient wildlife can end your character without a player involved.
  • Two species can spearfish Pteranodon has had the stance for a while and Austroraptor gained its own in 0.21.772, on G in both cases. The Austroraptor version works during daylight only, which is a genuine scheduling constraint: if you plan to fish as one, do it before the light goes rather than discovering the restriction at night.
  • Watch the swallow warning The game warns you when a chunk is too large to swallow, and it warns you when you are close to vomiting. Both prompts appear before the mistake, not after. Players who eat with the HUD ignored are the same players who spend six minutes crippled by food poisoning at the worst moment of a session.
  • Small ambient life is arriving Rats, lizards, snails, crabs, grasshoppers and dragonflies are being layered into the world as ambient spawns. They are aimed squarely at juveniles and small carnivores, so the early-life food problem is getting easier over time, not harder. Expect them to land on the hordetest branch first.

13 · Nine Habits Worth Building

A game measured in hours per character rewards discipline over reflexes.

  • Never fight at empty stamina The moment the bar bottoms out your turn radius collapses and you become target practice. Disengage at around a third remaining. The fight you leave early is the only reason the character still exists an hour later.
  • Wallow before you run Bleeding and tracked is a trail problem, not a distance problem. Mud clots the wound and kills the trail, which ends the pursuit. Sprinting only converts your bleed into more bleed and drains the stamina you will need.
  • Do not trade with a fracture A broken leg takes your jump, your leg attacks and most of your speed. Once you have one the fight is already decided, and the only correct play is leaving immediately rather than hoping the next bite lands.
  • Eat for the empty bar Check which nutrient is lowest before you eat rather than after. Eating whatever happens to be nearest is exactly how one player spends six hours reaching an adult that somebody else reached in three.
  • Treat rotten meat as poison It is poison. A few mouthfuls costs six or seven minutes of degraded stats, and off-diet bones add dehydration and repeated vomiting on top of that. Hungry is survivable; sick and hungry together usually is not.
  • Grow before you group Packs and herds are genuinely strong, but a hatchling travelling with adults is simply the easiest target in the group and the one a predator will cut out first. Reach juvenile under your own power.
  • Pick fights you can leave Speed is the only universal escape in this game. If you cannot outrun the thing you are about to bite, you are not choosing to start a fight, you are choosing to finish a character.
  • Bank the lifecycle Nesting, raising young to fifty percent and being born from somebody else’s egg all feed the Elder requirements and pass mutations forward, and mutation strength rises with each entombment. The hours only compound if you deliberately spend them this way.
  • Log off somewhere defensible Your character persists between sessions. Ending a night in open grassland next to a watering hole is how a twenty three hour Deinosuchus becomes somebody else’s breakfast before you next sit down.
