Wuthering Waves

Kuro Games’ sci-fi action RPG. Fluid combat, dodge-parry mechanics, post-cataclysmic story.

Welcome to the Cosmo strategy hub for Wuthering Waves. Kuro Games’ (developers of Punishing: Gray Raven) free-to-play open-world action RPG launched May 23, 2024 and reached its second anniversary with Version 3.3 (April 30, 2026). The current Chapter III narrative arc is set in the Lahai-Roi region with the addition of Dimmr Plains. Wuthering Waves emphasizes fast-paced action combat (dodges, parries, intro-skill chains) over Genshin’s elemental-reaction depth; the result is a more responsive combat feel that has earned the game multiple awards including the 2025 TGA Players’ Voice. Everything below is vanilla, mechanics-only knowledge — the combat loop, Elements, Resonators by role, the Echoes system, weapons, endgame, regions, the Convene system, Waveplate and dailies, F2P strategy, and pro tips.

01 · The Combat Loop

Action combat with dodges, parries, and intro-skill chains.

  • Three-Resonator team Players build teams of three Resonators (characters). Switch between them in real time; combat happens with one active Resonator at a time.
  • Dodge-and-parry combat Wuthering Waves emphasizes active defense. Perfect dodges trigger time-slow effects; perfect parries (against marked enemy attacks) deal massive damage and disable enemies.
  • Intro Skill / Outro Skill chains Each Resonator has an Intro Skill (triggered when swapping in) and Outro Skill (triggered when swapping out). Chaining swaps maximizes damage; the central team-rotation mechanic.
  • Resonance Liberation (Ultimate) Big-damage ultimate ability per Resonator. Energy-gated; coordinate Liberations for burst windows.
  • Concerto System Sequential ability triggers build "Concerto Energy" that enables Outro skills. The depth of the team-switching meta.
  • Echo Skills Equipped Echo monsters grant abilities to Resonators. Echo skills extend team capability and add unique mechanics per build.
  • Open-world exploration Rover (the player’s avatar) explores the world via wall-running, gliding, and motorbike (added in later versions). Exploration is the primary source of free Astrite.

02 · The Six Elements

Each Resonator is locked to one Element.

ElementVisualCombat Identity
Glacio (Ice)Cyan-blueCrowd control and burst damage. Pairs well with Spectro for Spectro-Frazzle reactions.
Fusion (Fire)Orange-redDirect damage and burning effects. Strong single-target burst options.
Electro (Lightning)Purple-pinkSustained damage with crowd-control effects. Pairs with Havoc for amplified damage.
Aero (Wind)GreenCrowd-control and group damage. Aero characters are often Support hybrid.
Spectro (Light)White-yellowPure-light damage. Pairs with Glacio for amplified damage.
Havoc (Dark)Black-purpleHeavy single-target damage. Pairs with Electro for Electro-Havoc reactions.

03 · Resonators by Role

Three primary combat roles.

Main DPS (Carry) On-field damage dealers
  • Encore (Fusion)
  • Jiyan (Aero)
  • Carlotta (Glacio)
  • Roccia (Havoc)
  • Camellya (Havoc)
  • Hiyuki (Glacio, 3.3)
Bring
Mechanical skill in dodging/parrying and willingness to be the carry.
Take
The team’s primary damage output. Build first; invest gear and weapons here.

DPS Resonators carry the most damage and stay on-field longest. Pulling characters here is the F2P priority.

Sub-DPS (Off-field) Outro-skill-triggered damage
  • Yinlin (Electro)
  • Zhezhi (Glacio)
  • Brant (Fusion)
  • Cantarella (Havoc)
  • Cartethyia (Aero)
  • Denia (Fusion, 3.3)
Bring
Team coordination and willingness to play swap-rotation patterns.
Take
Burst damage activated via Outro skills. Multiplies main DPS output significantly.

Sub-DPS Resonators often outperform Main DPS in total damage when chained correctly. The hidden strength of WuWa team-building.

Support & Healing Buff allies, sustain team
  • Shorekeeper (Spectro)
  • Verina (Spectro)
  • Yangyang (Aero)
  • Phoebe (Spectro)
  • Iuno (Spectro)
Bring
Team-first mindset and willingness to play roles that don’t top damage charts.
Take
Healing, shielding, buffing. Endgame content typically requires at least one Support.

Support Resonators enable longer engagements. Shorekeeper and Verina are particularly meta-defining for sustain.

04 · The Echoes System

Capture monsters; equip them as gear with skills.

  • Echoes are captured enemies Defeat enemies in the open world to capture their Echoes. Each Echo can be equipped on a Resonator as a gear piece with a special skill.
  • Five Echo slots per Resonator Each Resonator equips 5 Echoes. One is the "Main Echo" with an active skill; the other four provide stat bonuses.
  • Sonata Effects (set bonuses) Equipping 2 or 5 Echoes of the same Sonata Effect unlocks bonuses. Sonata Effects align with elements (Lingering Tunes for Glacio, Sun-Sinking Eclipse for Havoc, etc.).
  • Main Stats and Sub-Stats Each Echo rolls a Main Stat (e.g., Crit Rate, ATK%) and 5 Sub-Stats. The Sub-Stat grind is the deep optimization layer.
  • Echo cost system Echoes have Cost values (1, 3, or 4). Total Cost across 5 equipped Echoes capped at 12; balance high-cost main Echoes with low-cost stat pieces.
  • Tuners for enhancement Tuners are consumables used to enhance Echoes. Spend Waveplate on Tower of Adversity and weekly bosses to farm them.
  • Tacet Marks (specific Echoes) Certain Sonata Effects come from specific monsters. Hunt the right enemy in the right region for the Echo you need.

05 · Weapons

Five weapon types, locked per Resonator.

  • Five weapon types Sword, Broadblade (large sword), Pistols (ranged), Rectifier (catalyst), Gauntlets (fist weapon). Each Resonator is locked to one weapon type.
  • 5-star Signature weapons Each limited 5-star Resonator has a Signature 5-star weapon. Strongest possible weapon for that Resonator; pulls via the Absolute Pulsation banner.
  • 4-star Battle Pass weapons Monthly Battle Pass rewards a 4-star weapon of choice. Often best-in-slot for budget builds; reliable for F2P progression.
  • Standard 5-star weapons Available from the standard banner pool. Reliable backups when Signatures are unavailable; some are top-tier for specific Resonators.
  • Refinement (R1-R5) Stack duplicate weapons for Refinement levels. R5 (max) significantly boosts passive effects. 4-star weapons reach R5 faster than 5-stars.
  • Weapon ascension parallel to character Weapons ascend at same level breakpoints as Resonators. Don’t over-invest in weapons before Ascending the Resonator.
  • Forte attributes Each Resonator has Forte Attributes (additional passive bonuses unlocked via Resonance Chain and Forte trees). Plan investment with weapons in mind.

06 · Endgame Content

Tower of Adversity is the flagship; Endstate Matrix added in 3.2.

  • Tower of Adversity (TOA) The classic endgame. Multiple Towers (Stable, Experimental, Hazard, Hatchery) with rotating challenges. Resets every 2 weeks; clear for Astrite rewards.
  • Tactical Hologram (boss rush) Single-boss high-difficulty encounters. Each Hologram tests team-fight precision against scaled boss versions. Rewards exclusive materials and Astrite.
  • Endstate Matrix (3.2+) New endgame mode added in Version 3.2. Multi-stage encounter with team-rotation requirements. The latest endgame tier.
  • Whimpering Wastes Permanent roguelike-adjacent mode. Random buffs stack into broken builds; rewards experimentation.
  • Weekly Bosses Weekly boss fights for weapon and Resonator ascension materials. 3 free clears per week; respect the week cycle.
  • World Bosses Field bosses across the open world. Drop ascension materials for specific Resonators.
  • Limited-time Events Recurring event challenges with unique mechanics and rewards. Always complete for free Astrite and event-exclusive cosmetics.

07 · Story Regions

Solaris-3 is the planet; multiple regions explored.

  • Huanglong (1.0–1.x) The starting region. Chinese-mythology-inspired empire. Rover’s base of operations; tutorial-paced content.
  • Rinascita (2.0+) Italian-Renaissance-inspired island region. Phoebe’s home; introduces multiple Resonators and the Fractsidus narrative arc.
  • Lahai-Roi (3.0+) Sci-fi-themed region. Startorch Academy and space-fantasy setting. Current narrative focus (Chapter III).
  • Dimmr Plains (3.3) New area added with Version 3.3. Underground section of Bjartr Woods; Stridergate-themed. Threnodian power-themed environment.
  • Cross-region quests Story quests bridge regions. Side stories, World Quests, and Resonator-specific quests provide region-by-region depth.
  • Chapter III Acts Chapter III is the current narrative arc. Acts 1-5 across multiple versions; ongoing story.
  • Future regions Solaris-3 is large; multiple regions still unexplored. The 4.x version cycle (mid-to-late 2026) will likely add new regions.

08 · The Convene Gacha System

Standard banner mechanics with 80-pull pity.

  • Convene = Gacha pull Each pull costs Radiant Tides or Forging Tides. Pulls draw from the banner pool: 5-star Resonator, 5-star Weapon, 4-stars, and 3-stars.
  • Hard pity at 80 (5-star Resonator) Guaranteed 5-star at 80 pulls. Soft pity ramps from ~63. Most 5-stars drop between 63 and 80.
  • 50/50 system First 5-star you pull on a limited Resonator banner is 50/50: limited featured Resonator or standard pool. Lose 50/50? Next 5-star guaranteed featured.
  • Guarantee carries between banners Lose 50/50 on a banner? The next limited Resonator banner you pull on guarantees the featured 5-star. Pity also carries over.
  • Weapon Banner: 65-pull pity, guaranteed Signature Absolute Pulsation Convene Banner pity is 65. Signature 5-star weapons are guaranteed; less RNG than Genshin’s 75/25.
  • Standard banner Permanent banner with fixed 5-star pool. F2P players accumulate Standard pulls naturally; useful for backup characters.
  • Selector banners (anniversary) Anniversary updates offer free 5-star Selectors. WuWa 1st anniversary offered 10 characters; 2nd anniversary offered 6. Choose meta-aligned picks.

09 · Waveplate & Daily Routine

Waveplate is the resin; 240 max with 6-min regen.

  • Waveplate: 240 max WuWa’s stamina system. Regenerates 1 per 6 minutes (240/day natural). Spend on Tower of Adversity stages, World Bosses, Tacet Mark farming.
  • Daily missions (Activity) Daily missions worth 100% Activity. Completing all 4 gives 60 Astrite + bonus materials per day. The minimum daily routine.
  • Echo Tacet farming Spend Waveplate on Echo farming for Sonata Effects. Hunt specific monsters for the Echo type you need; efficient routes save time.
  • Tower runs every 2 weeks Tower of Adversity resets bi-weekly. Always clear for maximum Astrite per cycle; the major endgame currency source.
  • Weekly bosses 3 free clears per week. Pulled materials for weapons and Forte Attributes. Worth the time investment.
  • Stored Waveplate (Crystal Solvent) Stored Waveplate items grant 60 Waveplate instantly. Save for double-drop event weekends; maximize efficiency.
  • Login bonuses Daily login rewards include Astrite, Crystal Solvent, and event-exclusive items. Five minutes per day prevents missing limited-time freebies.

10 · Free-to-Play Strategy

WuWa is among the most-generous gachas; budget your pulls.

  • Save for must-have units F2P players accumulate roughly 100-130 wishes per 6-week patch. Identify must-have characters (Shorekeeper, top DPS picks) and prioritize them.
  • Selector banner is a free 5-star Anniversary Selector banners give a free 5-star. WuWa’s most-generous F2P moment; choose carefully (Shorekeeper or top DPS picks).
  • 4-star Resonators are not weak Yuanwu, Mortefi, Yangyang, Sanhua, Chixia, Aalto — all clear endgame content. Don’t skip 4-star team-building.
  • Lunite Subscription (Monthly Pass) WuWa’s equivalent of Welkin Moon. $5/month for daily Lunite. Highest-value purchase for F2P-leaning players.
  • TOA full clear Clearing all Tower of Adversity stages gives ~400 Astrite per cycle. F2P clears require team optimization but reachable with 4-star teams.
  • Don’t over-invest in weapons Weapon banner is lower-value than Resonator banner for F2P. Save for character banners; let Battle Pass weapons fill gear gaps.
  • Exploration nets Astrite Each region’s full exploration = 800-1500 Astrite. The biggest free Astrite reservoir in the game.

11 · Pro Tips

Compound habits across the live-service cycle.

  • Master parry timing Wuthering Waves’ parry system is mechanically rewarding. Practice on Tacet Discord enemies; learn the marked-attack indicator.
  • Intro-Outro chaining Master swap-skill chains: Resonator A Intro → Resonator B Skill → Resonator A Outro → Resonator B finisher. Compounds damage significantly.
  • Watch theorycrafters YouTube creators like Volkin, Prydwen, and WuWa-focused theorycrafters post per-patch breakdowns. Two hours/week saves hours of misallocation.
  • Echo grinding is the deep grind Optimizing Echoes (Sub-Stats, Sonata Effects) is the endgame time investment. Plan farming routes; don’t equip whatever drops.
  • Use the motorbike The motorbike (added in later versions) dramatically speeds exploration. Equip its modifiers; use it for daily missions.
  • Read the version livestream Pre-version livestreams reveal upcoming character kits and free Astrite codes. Tune in or read the recap for time-limited gifts.
  • Take breaks Wuthering Waves is a marathon. The story takes years to unfold; pace yourself. Anniversary updates always bring returning players back.
